The Baseball Buffet for 8/5/2026

WSH 0, PHI 5 - The trade for Luis Arraez gave the Phillies a new-look lineup in yesterday's game. Arraez plays both 2B and 1B, and in this game he played 2B, with Alec Bohm moving from his usual 3B over to 1B, Bryson Stott making his first appearance at 3B since his rookie season in 2022, and Bryce Harper moving from 1B to his old stomping ground in RF. Further, lineup construction isn't always handled as it used to be, but the Phillies had success tonight leading off slugger Kyle Schwarber and batting the newly acquired, high-average-but-limited-power Luis Arraez cleanup. While Schwarber went 0-4, Arraez went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, Trea Turner was 3-4 with 2 runs; and Stott and Justin Crawford had two hits apiece.

Meanwhile, PHI SP Jesús Luzardo pitched eight scoreless innings (8 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), and newly acquired reliever Caleb Killian combined with him for a 5-hit shutout. The Nationals offense had been one of the best in the game this season, but for the time being at least we should expect less scoring, as they traded Luis García Jr. to the Yankees, and James Wood just went on the IL.

STL 0, NYY 2 - STL SP Hunter Dobbins pitched fairly well (6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), but gave up a solo HR to Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the second inning, and a solo HR to George Lombard Jr. in the fifth. This was 21-year-old SS George Lombard Jr.'s major league debut, after the Yankees had picked him with the 23rd overall pick in the 2023 draft, and then he worked his way up through the minors since then. Those two runs were all the Yankees would need, as NYY SP Ryan Weathers threw six scoreless frames (6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), and three New York relievers combined for a shutout, including David Bednar who recorded his 25th save.

MIA 2, ATL 4 - Both starting pitchers were effective, with ATL SP Grant Holmes throwing six scoreless innings (6 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), and MIA SP Ryan Gusto (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) only allowing a solo HR by Ozzie Albies in the second. Austin Riley hit a 2-run HR in the seventh, and the Braves went up 4-0 after the eighth. They brought in closer Raisel Iglesias for the ninth, and he gave up three hits and a walk that allowed two runs in. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jakob Marsee tried to steal third but Braves catcher Drake Baldwin fired a bullet to catch him and end the game.

SFG 4, TEX 5 - The Rangers scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but then SFG SP Blade Tidwell settled in for five solid innings (5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). TEX SP MacKenzie Gore threw six scoreless frames (6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), but then Chase Silseth gave up a 2-run HR by Osleivis Basabe as the Giants tied the game in the seventh. Texas went back up by two in the bottom of the eighth, but the Giants tied it again in the top of the ninth on a 2-run single by Bryce Eldridge. Dylan Smith came in for the Giants, but immediately allowed a double to Jake Burger. He intentionally walked Corey Seager and struck out Brandon Nimmo for the second out of the inning, but then Ezequiel Duran hit a walk-off single that drove in Burger for the win.

TBR 9, COL 7 (11) - Although he has pitched well in Colorado over his career, TBR SP Freddy Peralta struggled in his first start for the Rays (3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), giving up a 3-run HR to Mickey Moniak in the third, and a 2-run HR to Willi Castro in the fourth. COL SP Gabriel Hughes also ran into trouble by giving up five runs in the third inning (5.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), including a grand slam by the Rays' newly acquired catcher Liam Hicks. With a 7-5 lead the Rockies brought in Jordan Romano for the ninth, but he allowed a walk and two singles which tied the game. The contest went into extras, and neither team scored in the 10th. The Rockies called upon rookie Nick Frasso to make his major league debut in the 11th. Taylor Walls laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the automatic runner to third, and then a wild pitch let him score. Yandy Díaz hit a double, and then Junior Caminero hit a 2-out single to drive him in. Rays closer Bryan Baker struck out two in the bottom of the 11th to record his MLB-leading 32nd save.
