The Baseball Buffet for 8/2/2026

ARI 12, CLE 8 - Rookie ARI SP Kohl Drake (4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) made his third major league start, and gave up a 2-run HR to Rhys Hoskins in the first inning. The Diamondbacks tied the game with two in the fifth off CLE SP Parker Messick (4.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). Still tied 2-2 after six innings, Arizona erupted for seven runs in the seventh, as Geraldo Perdomo hit a solo HR and Corbin Carroll hit a 3-run HR. They added another run to go up 10-2 when Nolan Arenado hit a HR in the top of the eighth.

Paul Sewald came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth, but he struggled immediately, giving up a solo HR to Chase DeLauter and then four consecutive singles without recording any outs. Kevin Ginkel came in for Sewald, but Cleveland scored five in that inning and the score was 10-7. The D-Backs added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, and then Jonathan Loáisiga allowed two doubles and one run in the bottom of the ninth but eventually closed it out. Perdomo went 4-6, James McCann was 3-4, and Carroll, Arenado, Ildemaro Vargas, and Ryan Waldschmidt had two hits apiece for Arizona. Steven Kwan went 3-5, and Kyle Manzardo, Angel Martínez, Petey Halpin, and Travis Bazzana had two each for Cleveland.

WSH 3, ATL 8 - Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson hit back-to-back HRs in the first inning, and then Dominic Smith added a solo HR in the fourth, all hit off WSH SP Miles Mikolas (6 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). The Braves added four more runs in the seventh to go up 8-0, as veteran lefty ATL SP Martín Pérez had a no-hitter through six innings, only allowing a single to Brady House in the seventh (7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). The Nationals finally scored three runs off Braves' reliever Danny Young, but then Victor Mederos pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game. Mike Yastrzemski went 2-4 with 2 doubles, and Austin Riley was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

STL 1, TOR 5 - Rookie STL SP Quinn Mathews made his major league debut and allowed several baserunners but only two runs (5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K). Cardinals reliever Luis Gastelum continued to struggle, giving up three runs in the seventh. Meanwhile, TOR SP Kevin Gausman allowed 9 hits over 5.2 innings, but only one run came across (1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Four Bluebird relievers kept the Redbirds off the board the rest of the game, with Tyler Rogers closing out the ninth. The Cardinals actually outhit the Blue Jays 11-9 in this game, but it is hard to win when you go 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leave 11 ducks on the pond. George Springer was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, while Jordan Walker, Alec Burleson, and Blaze Jordan had two hits each for the Cardinals in the loss.

DET 8, ATH 6 - Each team had 15 hits in this contest, with both starting pitchers giving up nine each. The difference was that three of the hits ATH SP Jack Perkins (5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) allowed were HRs by Kevin McGonigle, Gleyber Torres, and Max Clark -- the first of his MLB career. DET SP Framber Valdez only allowed 2 runs over 7 innings (9 H, 2 BB, 6 K). Although Henry Bolte hit a 3-run HR in the eighth inning and the Athletics scored one more in the ninth, ultimately Kenley Jansen was able to close it out for his 13th save. McGonigle went 3-4, and Torres, Clark, Colt Keith, Eduardo Valencia, and Spencer Torkelson had two hits apiece for Detroit. Bolte and Tommy White had three hits each, and Tyler Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler had two hits apiece for the Athletics in the loss.
