⚾ Welcome! ⚾
Yesterday featured a typical full slate of Wednesday games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
ATL 3, PIT 0 - PIT SP Jared Jones had his best start of the year, taking a perfect game through six innings (6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K). But this was only his eighth start since coming back from injury, and the first time he'd gone over five innings, so the Pirates turned to their bullpen. After getting one out in seventh, Mason Montgomery allowed a single so both the perfect game and no-hitter were over. He closed out the inning, and then Dennis Santana came in for the eighth but allowed a 2-run HR to former Bucs batterymate Joey Bart. Meanwhile, ATL SP Grant Holmes also pitched well through five innings (5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), and four Braves relievers threw scoreless innings to combine for a 4-hit shutout. Closer Raisel Iglesias struck out two in the ninth to earn his 18th save.
TOR 10, SFG 0 - TOR SP Dylan Cease carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but Heliot Ramos led off that inning with a single. With Cease at 118 pitches at that point, Tyler Rogers relieved him and closed out the 1-hit shutout. Things went differently for SFG SP Logan Webb, as he gave up five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam by Kazuma Okamoto, his 21st HR of the year. Webb settled in after that and didn't allow any further scoring through seven innings (7 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). The Blue Jays did however score five more runs over the last two frames, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer hitting back-to-back home runs in the ninth.
CHC 9, BAL 7 - This one turned into a slugfest complete with nine HRs, including four allowed by BAL SP Dean Kremer (5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). CHC SP Colin Rea only allowed one HR (5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), but the Cubs bullpen was tagged for three more. For Chicago, Pete Crow-Armstrong went 2-4 with 2 HRs and a walk, while Seiya Suzuki, Michael Conforto, and Carson Kelly each hit a HR. For Baltimore, Tyler O'Neill had a pinch-hit HR in the seventh, and then added a second HR an inning later. Coby Mayo also had a pinch-hit HR, while Pete Alonso connected for his 20th HR of the season.

Today’s Trivia Question
One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is longtime outfielder for the Royals, Willie Wilson. In 1980 he set a new single-season record for official regular season at-bats with 705, topping Dave Cash's 699 AB from 1975. Juan Samuel came close in 1984 with 701 AB, and Ichiro Suzuki did also in 2004 with 704. Which player eventually set a new single-season record for the most regular season at-bats with 716?

Today’s Matchups
Today we have a nearly full slate of games (13), more than usual for a Thursday, with only a few teams traveling or otherwise having the day off. Here are a couple of interesting matchups (and here is a link to the full schedule):
BOS Patrick Sandoval vs. CWS Anthony Kay - Sandoval is making his 2026 major league debut after finally coming off the IL
NYY TBD Pitcher vs. TBR Drew Rasmussen - The Yankees have lost two of three to the Rays so far in this series—can they salvage a split with their division rivals? They haven’t announced a starter as of the time of this writing, while the Rays have Rasmussen who has been good this year (7-4, 2.78 ERA). The Rays now hold a 5-game lead in the AL East.
Additional starters who are throwing from the hill today include KCR Michael Wacha, CLE Gavin Williams, DET Framber Valdez, SEA Bryce Miller, PHI Jesús Luzardo, and TEX Nathan Eovaldi.

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Willie Wilson, so here is a good quote from him:
"I was fortunate enough to have baseball to teach me the values relative to success. The sport gifted me with leadership and team building skills that translate in a relatable way in the world."
