⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday featured a full slate of Sunday games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • NYM 10, ATL 9 - The Mets scored five runs early against ATL SP Martín Pérez, including rookie AJ Ewing hitting a solo HR in the second inning. The Braves also scored early, with three runs in the first against NYM SP Nolan McLean before he settled in for six innings of work (6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K). Neither team scored from the third to the eighth, but then the Mets scored five in the top of the ninth off veteran Carlos Carrasco, including Tyrone Taylor hitting a solo HR. The Braves made a valiant comeback in the bottom of the ninth, collecting seven hits off Mets relievers Huascar Brazobán and Devin Williams, including Drake Baldwin connecting for a grand slam. Williams loaded the bases with two outs, but was able to strike out Dominic Smith to end the wild ninth inning and the game. Bo Bichette went 3-5 with 3 RBI; Juan Soto was 2-4 with a walk and 2 RBI; and Brett Baty went 2-4 with a double and 2 runs. For the Braves, Michael Harris II was 2-5 with 3 RBI; Mauricio Dubón was 3-5, and Austin Riley went 2-4 in the loss.

  • MIA 9, ATH 8 - The Marlins scored eight runs over the first six innings, with Heriberto Hernández hitting two solo HRs, Leo Jiménez hitting a 2-run HR, and Otto Lopez hitting a solo HR. Meanwhile, Eury Pérez had a perfect game going through seven innings (7 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K), but also had thrown 92 pitches to get that far (the most he'd thrown in three starts since returning from nearly a month on the IL. Since it’s 2026 and not a few decades ago, the Marlins took him out and brought in reliever Lake Bachar (to be fair, the Marlins are also looking at a potential playoff spot, so will need Pérez healthy all year).

Unfortunately, any shot at a combined perfect game or no-hitter was quickly lost, as Bachar really struggled (0 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 0 K), including giving up a grand slam to Jonah Heim. The Marlins scored one more in the ninth to go up 9-5, and brought in Pete Fairbanks to close it out. And he did eventually do that, but not without it getting interesting with the Athletics scoring three to come within one. Otto Lopez was 3-4 with a walk, a double, 2 runs, and 3 RBI, raising his MLB-leading batting average to .346. Liam Hicks went 2-5 with 2 RBI; Xavier Edwards was 2-4 with 2 walks; and Brian Navarreto went 2-4 with a double.

  • SDP 5, LAD 2 - Both starting pitchers did well in short outings: SDP SP J.P. Sears (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) and LAD SP Emmet Sheehan (4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). The Padres had a 1-0 lead through six, scored a run in the seventh and then Manny Machado hit a 3-run HR that inning to put them up 5-0. The Dodgers came back with two in the bottom of the frame, but that was all they could muster as Mason Miller eventually pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save. The win ended an 8-game skid for San Diego.

(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Willie Randolph, so here are two quotes from him:

"There's no comparison to me. There's nothing like Yankees- Red Sox to me."

"For me, the biggest gift my father gave me wasn't turning the double play or hitting a ball, it was getting up every morning at the crack of dawn and working his butt off. [He would] sling a jackhammer, coming home covered in cement and dirty. He would get a shower, eat, go to bed and do the work again. I watched him do that for years." - This quote is from an article by Bill Ladson at MLB
