The Baseball Buffet for 7/29/2026

ARI 8, PIT 7 - The Diamondbacks scored runs in each of the first four innings against PIT SP Bubba Chandler (4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and built up a 6-0 lead through seven innings, as ARI SP Brandon Pfaadt was very effective (7 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). But the Pirates offense came alive against the D-Backs’ bullpen, scoring three runs in the eighth, and then getting back-to-back HRs from Brandon Lowe and Bryan Reynolds to tie the game and force extras. Both teams scored a run in the 10th, and neither team scored in the 11th. Wilber Dotel had pitched for Pittsburgh that inning and came back out for the 12th. Jorge Barrosa successfully bunted the automatic runner over to third, and then James McCann singled to drive him in. Like Dotel, rookie Gerardo Carrillo had pitched the 11th and so came back out for the bottom of the 12th, but in his case got a ground out and two strikeouts to earn the win.

KCR 2, MIN 3 - Both starting pitchers threw six good innings: KCR SP Seth Lugo (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and MIN SP Taj Bradley (6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 K). The Royals held their 2-1 lead through eight innings, and brought in Alex Lange to pitch the ninth. Victor Caratini led off with a single, and Brooks Lee walked. With two outs, Royce Lewis drove them both in with a walk-off triple to right, his first triple of the season.

SEA 7, LAD 6 - Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff HR in the bottom of the first, but Cal Raleigh tied the game with a HR in the second. That was the first of four HRs that LAD SP Justin Wrobleski would allow, as Julio Rodríguez and Rob Refsnyder connected for longballs in the fourth, and Dominic Canzone hit one in the sixth. SEA SP Luis Castillo also struggled, giving up 11 hits over 5 innings (5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), including a HR to Max Muncy in the fifth. The game was tied 5-5 when Canzone struck again, this time with a 2-run HR in the eighth. The Mariners turned to closer Andrés Muñoz in the ninth, and he gave up a single to Dalton Rushing, and then an RBI-double to Ohtani. But Muñoz recovered and got a strikeout and two groundouts to end the game and earn his 19th save.

CLE 6, CIN 5 (Gm1) - CIN SP Chase Burns got off to a rocky start, with a single, a walk, and an error by Edwin Arroyo loading the bases in the first inning. With two outs, Kyle Manzardo claimed he was hit by a pitch, but the Reds challenged the call and it was overruled. So Manzardo then hit a grand slam instead, with Burns (5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) settling in after the wild first inning.

CLE SP Slade Cecconi (3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) gave up a solo HR to Sal Stewart in the third inning, and then was charged three of the four runs the Reds scored in the fourth. The game was tied 5-5 through seven when Reds reliever Sam Moll allowed two singles and then a sacrifice fly giving the Guardians the lead. Hunter Gaddis pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth, and Cleveland closer Cade Smith did the same in the ninth to earn his MLB-leading 30th save. José Ramírez went 2-5 with 2 runs, while Stewart, Elly De La Cruz, Nathaniel Lowe, Tyler Stephenson, and Dane Myers each had two hits for the Reds.

CLE 0, CIN 2 (Gm2) - CLE SP Gavin Williams had an impressive 12 K over 7 IP (3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB), but he gave up a solo HR to JJ Bleday in the first inning, and another run later in the fifth. That would be all the Reds would need in game two, as their bullpen approach involved five pitchers combining for a 3-hit shutout. Emilio Pagán struck out two in the ninth for 11th save.

ARI Eduardo Rodriguez vs. PIT Jared Jones - game three of this series (split 1-1) between NL wildcard contenders features two pretty solid starters

NYY Cam Schlittler vs. CWS Davis Martin - the third game of this important AL series features a Cy Young Award candidate in Schlittler (10-6, 2.07 ERA), and Davis who has been pretty good this year also (9-5, 3.49 ERA)

ATL AJ Smith-Shawver vs. NYM Sean Manaea (Gm1) and ATL Chris Sale vs. NYM Christian Scott (Gm2) - apparently the rained-out matchup from yesterday will now be game two of today's double-header, with the 23-year old Smith-Shawver making his 2026 debut in game one
