The Baseball Buffet for 7/24/2026

SDP 5, ATL 6 - Padres opener Kyle Hart threw a scoreless first inning, but then long man Griffin Canning struggled (2.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K), giving up a solo HR to Michael Harris II in the second inning, and then a solo HR to Ozzie Albies and a 3-run HR to Dom Smith in the fourth. Meanwhile, ATL SP Chris Sale had 11 K over 6 innings (5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB). Drake Baldwin added a solo HR in the seventh to give the Braves a 6-3 lead. Ty France hit a 2-run HR in the eighth to bring San Diego within one, but then Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias came on for the ninth, gave up two singles, but got out of it unscathed with his 21st save of the year.

MIN 3, CLE 1 (12) - CLE SP Gavin Williams was outstanding, with 11 K over 7 innings (2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB). MIN SP Taj Bradley also pitched well (7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), only giving up a solo HR to Patrick Bailey in the fifth. The Twins tied the game in the eighth after two batters walked and Alan Roden hit a single to drive in Royce Lewis. The game stayed tied through the 9th, 10th, and 11th innings. Erik Sabrowski came in for Cleveland to pitch the top of the 12th, but singles by Trevor Larnach and Luke Keaschall drove in two runs. Twins rookie Jack Anderson, making only his fifth major league appearance, came in for the bottom of the 12th and after walking one batter managed to close it out for his first save.

TBR 1, TOR 3 - Rays opener Casey Lugmina allowed a run in the first inning, and then long man Ian Seymour allowed runs in the third and seventh (6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K). That was all the Blue Jays would need, as TOR SP Shane Bieber pitched well for seven innings (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), and two Blue Jays relievers threw scoreless innings, including Louis Varland who struck out two in the ninth to notch his 21st save. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer each had two hits in the win.

ARI 10, STL 6 - The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the first, but then ARI SP Brandon Pfaadt settled in for six solid innings (6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). The Diamondbacks took the lead with four runs in the middle innings off STL SP Michael McGreevy (6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), including a 2-run HR by Tyler Locklear in the fourth. They piled on six more runs in the eighth and ninth innings, scored against three different Cardinals relievers. With a 10-2 lead, Ryan Thompson came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth. He gave up a single and then with two outs allowed three more singles and a double, with four runs coming in before he finally got Masyn Winn to ground out to end the game. Tyler Locklear, Gabriel Moreno, Adrian Del Castillo, and Ildemaro Vargas each had three hits for Arizona, and Corbin Carroll hit his MLB-leading 12th triple of the season. For the Cardinals, Alec Burleson went 3-5 with 2 doubles, and JJ Wetherholt, Jordan Walker, and Lars Nootbaar had two hits apiece in the loss.

KCR 3, DET 4 - Neither team scored through the first five innings, as KCR SP Randy Dobnak pitched well (5 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and DET SP Troy Melton did also (5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K), finally giving up a 2-run HR to Isaac Collins in the sixth. James Outman hit a 3-run HR in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tigers a one-run advantage. But then a single by Josh Rojas in the top of the eighth drove in Tyler Tolbert to tie the game 3-3. In the bottom of the eighth Hao-Yu Lee singled, and then with two outs Dillon Dinger hit a double to drive him in for the go-ahead run. Drew Sommers came in for Detroit for the ninth, but after striking out Carter Jensen he allowed a walk and a single. Kyle Finnegan replaced Sommers and induced Salvador Perez to hit into a game-ending double play.

1931: Babe Herman hits for the cycle for the second time in two weeks. "For the second time in ten days, Babe Herman hits for the cycle. When he hits another cycle as a member of the Cubs in 1933, he will become only the third player to have done so three times. The Robins still lose to Pittsburgh, 8 - 7. It will be 81 years until another major leaguer, Aaron Hill, has two cycles in a season, in 2012."

1961: Flying is part of the job. "Boston OF Jackie Jensen's fear of flying gets the best of him and he refuses to fly to Los Angeles. The Sox say they will not pay him for games he misses because of the problem."

1983: The one and only Pine Tar Game. "In the memorable "Pine Tar Game" at Yankee Stadium, George Brett hits an apparent two-run home run off Rich Gossage to give the Kansas City Royals a 5 - 4 lead with two outs in the 9th inning, only to have the homer taken away when Yankees manager Billy Martin, at the urging of coach Don Zimmer, points out that the pine tar on Brett's bat handle exceeds the 17 inches allowed in the rules. As a result, Brett is called out for illegally batting the ball, giving New York a 4 - 3 victory. Brett goes ballistic and the Royals immediately protest. American League President Lee MacPhail overrules his umpires for the first time, saying that the umpire's call went against the spirit of the rule, which should be rewritten and clarified, and that the home run will stand. The game will be resumed from that point on August 18th."

He initially was more a base-stealer than HR hitter, but in 1990 he had 33 HR and 114 RBI, to go with 52 SB and a .301 average to win his first NL MVP Award.

He went on to win seven MVP Awards in total, including 1992 and 1993, and then four consecutively from 2001-2004

A threatening presence at the plate, he led the NL in walks 12 times, and intentional walks 12 times, and is the all-time MLB leader in both categories.

He led the NL with 46 HR in 1993, his first year with the Giants, and then of course set the all-time single-season record with 73 HR in 2001.

He won batting titles with a .370 average in 2002 and a .362 mark in 2004.

He is the all-time leader in HR with 762, and had 2,935 hits, 2,227 runs, 1,996 RBI, a .298/.444/.607 slash line, and a 182 OPS+

He would have been an obvious first-ballot selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame except for the heavy suspicion of significant PED use during the second-half of his career, which taints his numbers and accomplishments in the eyes of many voters and fans.

Barry is the son of baseball star Bobby Bonds, who played in the majors for 14 seasons and had 332 HR and 461 SB.
