⚾ Welcome! ⚾
Yesterday was the first day of July and we had a nearly full slate of Wednesday games (14), with only the Angels and Mariners having the day off to accommodate the soccer game in Seattle (the two teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow). Here are the results of yesterday’s games (link to all game box scores):
DET 6, NYY 2 - Kevin McGonigle got the Tigers on the board with a solo HR in the third off NYY SP Will Warren (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K). DET SP Troy Melton was outstanding in over six innings of work (6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) and Detroit had a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Tigers reliever Drew Anderson had allowed two singles in the eighth, but then got himself out of the jam and so came back out for the ninth. After getting one out, he let a HR to Amed Rosario. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a single and then stole both second and third. Anderson threw a wild pitch allowing Chisholm Jr. to score to tie the game.
Neither team scored in the 10th, and the Yankees brought in Camilo Doval for the 11th. Doval got two outs, with the automatic runners advancing to third. Doval intentionally walked Riley Greene, who then stole second. Hao-Yu Lee walked to load the bases, and then Doval walked Spencer Torkelson to give the Tigers a one-run lead. With the bases still loaded, Zach McKinstry hit a groundball single that drove in two immediately, with another scoring when catcher Ali Sánchez made a wild throw to second trying to get McKinstry who was aggressively taking the extra base. Keider Montero, who had pitched the 10th already, came back out and threw a 1-2-3 11th inning as well, striking out Chisholm Jr. to end the game.SDP 3, CHC 23 - The Cubs jumped on SDP SP Walker Buehler early and often (4 IP, 7 H, 9 ER, 4 BB, 6 K), then kept hitting off Padres reliever Kyle Hart (2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). Yes, they then scored another eight runs in the eighth inning, but those came against catcher Rodolfo Durán who was the white-flag offering that San Diego had pitching at that point. He allowed two HRs, but the Cubs had already hit six legit HRs off Buehler and Hart. The biggest hitter of the day was clearly Dansby Swanson who went 3-5 with 3 HRs and 8 RBI, including a grand slam off Durán. Michael Conforto went 3-4 with a walk and 2 HR; Seiya Suzuki was 3-5 with a walk, a HR, and a double; Pete Crow-Armstrong was 2-4 with a HR; and Michael Busch was 2-6 with a HR. Meanwhile, CHC SP Colin Rea threw five solid innings (5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), giving up a solo HR to rookie infielder Sung-Mun Song, his first major league HR. Even though this game was a massive blowout, Jordan Wicks earned a save as he threw three full innings to close out the game (3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K).
TBR 4, KCR 0 - Junior Caminero continued his hot hitting, stroking a 2-run HR in the first inning, giving him a HR now in six consecutive games, and nine total home runs over his last eight games. KCR SP Seth Lugo allowed nine hits over six innings (6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K) including a solo HR by Cedric Mullins in the sixth. Meanwhile, TBR SP Shane McClanahan threw six scoreless innings (6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K), and three Rays relievers combined for a shutout, including Kevin Kelly who got the last four outs for his 4th save of the year. Taylor Walls went 3-4 with a double, and Mullins, Jonathan Aranda, and Chandler Simpson had two hits apiece.

Today’s Matchups
Today we have a partial slate of Thursday games (9), as several teams are either traveling or otherwise have the day off. Here are two interesting matchups (and here is a link to the full schedule):
CIN Chase Burns vs. MIL Jacob Misiorowski - This game should feature heat all-around, as it should be around 90 degrees at the 2:10 p.m. game time, and both Burns and Misiorowski throw high-end heat.
LAA Walbert Ureña vs. SEA Bryce Miller - Ureña has generally done well in his rookie season though had a rough last outing against the Athletics, while Miller has a 1.97 ERA over 45.2 IP so far this year.
Additional starting pitchers climbing the hill today include CWS Davis Martin, DET Framber Valdez, and LAD Roki Sasaki.

Baseball Quote of the Day
Much of the country has had a heat-wave recently, so here are quotes about baseball and the heat from arguably the two most-often quoted in the game:
"Well, it sure holds the heat well." - Casey Stengel (famously remarking about the artificial turf at the newly opened, blazingly hot Busch Stadium in 1968)
"It ain't the heat, it's the humility." - Yogi Berra
