⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday featured a full slate of Sunday games (15), plus the special Futures exhibition contest. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • AL Futures 6, NL Futures 1 - This exhibition is like an All-Star game of players from across the minors, with pitchers going only one or two innings and lots of player substitutions to let a lot of guys get into the game. The score was tied 1-1 through four innings, but then the AL team scored five runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, including a 2-run HR by catcher Nathan Flewelling, who has 16 HR in 73 games this year at High A-level in the Rays organization. For more on the game, see the article by Anthony Castrovince at MLB. To see how any prospects from your favorite team did, see the article at MLB, appropriately titled "Here's how all 30 teams' prospects fared in the Futures Game."

  • MIL 5, PIT 14 - The Pirates established an early 4-0 lead in the second inning, including a 2-run HR by Henry Davis. The Brewers scored two in the top of the fourth off PIT SP Paul Skenes (5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K), but then the Bucs exploded for ten runs in the bottom of the fourth. That included three more charged against MIL SP Robert Gasser (3 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), with Marcell Ozuna connecting for a solo HR. Milwaukee scored three in the eighth, including a 2-run HR by Brice Turang, but that wasn't nearly enough as newly acquired Pirates reliever Brandon Eisert threw a scoreless ninth to close it out. Jared Triolo went 3-5 with a double and 2 RBI, and Davis, Ozuna, Ryan O'Hearn, and Nick Gonzales had two hits apiece.

  • NYY 5, WAS 3 - In what is feeling like a daily occurrence, James Wood hit another HR to lead off the bottom of the first inning--giving him 10 leadoff HRs on the season. That was the only run that NYY SP Will Warren allowed (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), and the Yankees scored two in the fifth to take a momentary lead. Curtis Mead hit a solo HR in the sixth to tie the game, and the Nats went ahead with a run in the seventh. The Yankees came back with Ben Rice hitting a 2-run triple in the eighth, and then added an insurance run in the ninth, all charged to Nationals reliever Andrew Alvarez. Meanwhile, New York reliever Paul Blackburn pitched two scoreless frames to close it out for his first save of the season. Cody Bellinger went 2-3 with a double, a walk, and 2 runs, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 2-4 with a double.

  • HOU 5, TEX 6 - HOU SP Cristian Javier made his first start since April as he continues to work his way back from the IL. He had a short outing (3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), giving up three runs in the second inning. TEX SP MacKenzie Gore also had a short start (4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K), giving up a solo HR to Jose Altuve in the fourth inning. The Rangers went up 4-1 in the fifth, but then Houston tied it up in the seventh. Cam Smith hit a HR in the top of the eighth, but then Kyle Higashioka did the same in the bottom of the inning and the game remained tied at 5-5. Rangers' closer Jacob Latz gave up a single to Yainer Diaz, but then induced a double play from Jeremy Peña. He wisely walked slugger Yordan Alvarez, and then got Isaac Paredes to pop out. The Astros turned to their closer Josh Hader, but he immediately gave up consecutive singles to Wyatt Langford, Josh Jung, and then a walk-off by Brandon Nimmo.

  • BOS 3, NYM 2 (10) - BOS SP Payton Tolle had 7 K in a short start (3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB), with the recently called-up Brayan Bello coming in apparently to help manage the young Tolle's workload on the season. Bello did well also (4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K), giving up a solo HR by Francisco Lindor in the sixth. Meanwhile, 24-year-old rookie NYM SP Zach Thornton was outstanding in his third major league start (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). The Mets had a 2-0 lead through eight innings, but then Devin Williams struggled in the ninth, giving up a bases-loaded walk that drove in one, then a bases-loaded single to Jarren Duran which tied the game. The Red Sox brought in Aroldis Chapman who did not allow any runs in the bottom of the ninth, forcing extras. Boston leveraged small ball with a Connor Wong bunt moving the automatic runner over to third, and then a sacrifice fly by Anthony Seigler drove him in. Garrett Whitlock pitched a clean bottom of the tenth to earn his second save of the season, and extend the Red Sox winning streak to nine heading into the All-Star break.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys is Hall of Famer Stan Coveleski, so here are a few quotes from him:

"The pressure never lets up. Don't matter what you did yesterday. That's history. It's tomorrow that counts. So you worry all the time. It never ends. Lord, baseball is a worrying thing."

"I was never a strikeout pitcher. Why should I throw eight or nine balls to get a man out when I got away with three or four?"

Reflecting on his complete game shutout in the seventh game of the 1920 World Series: "Pitched that game and won it, and walked back alone to the clubhouse. And nobody said a word except maybe 'Nice game, Covey.' Just another ball game."

Enjoy the games today!
