⚾ Welcome! ⚾
We only had a partial slate of Monday games yesterday (8). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
MIL 15, ATH 14 (12) - This game was played at the AAA park in Las Vegas, to give locals an up-close preview of their future hometown team (the Athletics), and it ended up a wild one with 34 hits including 11 HRs. MIL SP Kyle Harrison had been having a great year, but was roughed up in this game (2.1 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). ATH SP Jeffrey Springs also struggled (5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), though the Athletics found themselves ahead 10-7 through seven innings. The Brewers didn't give up, scoring one in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extras. A wild 10th inning saw both teams score four runs, and then neither team scored in the 11th. Christian Yelich began the 12th as the automatic runner, and promptly stole third. Jackson Chourio struck out, but then Brice Turang hit a grounder up the middle and the throw home was off target allowing Yelich to score. Chad Patrick then came in for the bottom of the 12th, struck out two and earned his 3rd save.
For the Brewers, Andrew Vaughn went 4-6 with a HR, 2 doubles, and 4 RBI; Jake Bauers was 2-4 with a walk, a HR, and 3 RBI; William Contreras was 3-6 with a HR, 3 runs, and 3 RBI; and Jackson Chourio was 3-5 with a walk and 3 runs. For the Athletics, Shea Langeliers went 3-7 with a HR; Tyler Soderstrom was 3-4 with 2 walks, 2 HR, and 4 RBI; and Nick Kurtz was 3-6 with a walk, 2 HR, 3 runs, and 3 RBI. For more on this wild game, see the article by Theo DeRosa at MLB.NYY 7, CLE 5 (10) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a 2-run HR in the top of the first inning, and Ryan McMahon also tagged CLE SP Gavin Williams (5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) for a solo HR in the fifth inning. Down 4-3, the Guardians took the lead with a 2-run HR by Angel Martínez in the 6th inning. The Yankees tied it back up 5-5 in the eighth, and neither team scored in the ninth, forcing extras. Cleveland's closer Cade Smith had already pitched for five outs, so they brought in Shawn Armstrong for the top of the tenth. He got one out, then intentionally walked Ben Rice, and unintentionally walked Max Schuemann to load the bases. Cody Bellinger then singled to drive in two runs. Yankees reliever David Bednar had gotten the last two outs in the ninth, but he came back out for the tenth. After walking one batter, he retired three in a row to close it out for the win.
HOU 5, LAA 4 (10) - The Angels scored three runs in the second inning off HOU SP Spencer Arrighetti (6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 7 K), but the Astros came back to tie the game against LAA SP Grayson Rodriguez (5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) who left in the sixth. Zach Neto hit a solo HR in the seventh to give the Angels the lead again. In the top of the ninth, Los Angeles reliever Kirby Yates walked Jeremy Peña, who stole second, and then Christian Walker singled to drive him in. Josh Hader struck out three in the bottom of the ninth and the game went into extra innings.
Sam Aldegheri came in for the Angels, and immediately gave up a single to Brice Matthews which advanced the automatic runner, Jose Altuve, to third. Jake Meyers popped out to 2B Nick Madrigal in shallow center, but Altuve tagged up for home and the throw to the plate got past catcher Logan O'Hoppe. In the bottom of the tenth, Bryan Abreu came in to pitch for the Astros and Jose Siri singled on a lined drive to left. The automatic runner, Mike Trout, tried to score but Brice Matthews made a great throw to get him at home. Abreu was then able to close it out for his 4th save. Of note, veteran 1B Trey Mancini went 3-4 for the Angels in his first major league action since 2023.SEA 6, BAL 3

Today’s Trivia Question
One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Hall of Famer Dave Parker. He won consecutive NL batting titles while with the Pirates in 1977 and 1978. How many of the four other Pirates players can you name who led the NL in batting average two or more times? For bonus points, can you name any of the six other Pirates players who led the NL in batting average just once?
(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys is Hall of Famer Dave Parker, so here are a few good quotes from him:
"When the leaves turn brown, I'll be wearing the batting crown."
"September is pantyhose month. No nonsense."
"I'm just a guy that grew up in a total fun-loving environment. I try to create that everywhere I go. Basically what I'm doing is a reflection of me as an individual, me naturally. I'm not staging or putting on anything. I think my approach to the game is an all-out approach, whatever it takes to win. I've always been that way."
Then here are a few quotes about Parker:
"Until I joined [the Pirates] I'd never realized how big Dave Parker was. I'd put him up against the French Army." - Phil Garner
"If you feel down, sorry for yourself, he gets the spark going in you. Dave’s found that picking on someone makes guys rally round, laugh. Suddenly, they’re ready. It’s group therapy." - Phil Garner
"There isn’t a player alive who plays the game the way Dave Parker does. Every game is the seventh game of the World Series to him. There isn’t a player alive who can do the things on the field that Parker can do. None." - Chuck Tanner in 1978
