Issue #661

The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!

⚾ Welcome! ⚾

We once again had a full slate (15) of Friday games yesterday. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • SFG 18, CHC 3 - SFG SP Robbie Ray pitched five scoreless innings (5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 4 K), and while the Cubs scored three later, including Seiya Suzuki hitting his 9th HR of the year, it really didn't matter. That's because the Giants went off CHC SP Edward Cabrera (3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), Chicago's bullpen also, tallying 19 hits and 18 runs in all. They had seven HRs in total, with Willy Adames going 2-2 with 2 walks, 2 HR, 4 runs, and 4 RBI, and Matt Chapman going 2-3 with 2 HR and 8 RBI (one HR was a grand slam). Casey Schmitt went 4-6 with 2 HR, 3 runs, and 3 RBI; Jonah Cox went 3-3 with a HR; and Luis Arraez and Rafael Devers were both 2-5 with a double.

  • MIL 9, COL 7 (10) - The Rockies scored a run in each of the first three innings off MIL SP Brandon Sproat (5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), including Hunter Goodman hitting his 16th of the year in the third inning. Meanwhile, COL SP Ryan Feltner pitched very well (6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) and the Rockies had a 3-1 lead through eight innings. But then Milwaukee collected a series of hits off Antonio Senzatela and scored four in the top of the ninth to go up 5-3. Trevor Megill came in for the Brewers, but he allowed three singles, a walk, and then a sacrifice fly by Goodman drove in Braxton Fulford, tying the game 5-5 and forcing extras. The Rockies brought in Juan Mejia, but he allowed two walks, a 2-run double to Jake Bauers, and then two singles which gave the Brewers a four-run lead. Aaron Ashby loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth and Sterlin Thompson singled to drive in two, but then Ashby induced a double play from Brett Sullivan and struck out Jake McCarthy to close it out.

  • LAA 0, LAD 1 - This one was a pitcher's duel, with both starting pitchers doing very well: LAA SP Reid Detmers (6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) and LAD SP Roki Sasaki (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K). Each team could only manage three hits in the game, but the one that mattered was Freddie Freeman's walk-off HR in the bottom of the ninth off former teammate Kirby Yates.

Today’s Trivia Question

One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Hall of Famer Bill Dickey, who was a long-time catcher with the Yankees. He played 1,789 games for the club, and that ranks 9th all-time—how many can you name of the eight players who played in more games with the Yankees?

(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Bill Dickey, Anthony Rendon, Ed McKean, Bill Lange

Currently active players who were born on June 6 include DET Will Vest, ATL Dylan Dodd, LAA Joey Lucchesi, and WSH Riley Cornelio.

Today’s Matchups

We have another full slate of games today (15), with the following matchups looking interesting (and here is a link to the full schedule):

  • ATH Kade Morris vs. HOU Tatsuya Imai - The 23-year-old Morris is set to make his major league debut

  • BOS Ranger Suarez vs. NYY Will Warren - Here is another rivalry game in the Bronx featuring two pitchers having decent seasons so far.

  • PIT Braxton Ashcraft vs. ATL Spencer Strider - Ashcraft is having a good season with a 2.77 ERA so far, but will be tested by the tough Braves lineup. Meanwhile, Strider is getting strikeouts but also having mixed results overall (3.77 ERA).

  • MIL Jacob Misiorowski vs. COL TBD Pitcher - given how dominant he has been lately, it almost seems unfair for Misiorowski to go up against the Rockies (who are not a good club, and in particular fifth in MLB in total strikeouts). But then again, the game is in Colorado so that can sometimes throw some pitchers off.

Other starting pitchers throwing today include SEA Bryce Miller, MIN Joe Ryan, CHC Ben Brown, ARI Eduardo Rodriguez, TBR Shane McClanahan, LAD Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and NYM Nolan McLean.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Bill Dickey, so here are a few quotes from him:

"I loved to make a great defensive play, I'd rather do that than hit a home run."

"A catcher must want to catch. He must make up his mind that it isn't the terrible job it is painted, and that he isn't going to say every day, 'Why, oh why with so many other positions in baseball did I take up this one.'"

"You guys got to see this kid (Mickey Mantle) we have in camp. Out of class C ball, hits 'em both ways - five-hundred feet both ways! You've got to see him." Source: The Sporting News (July 4, 1951)
