Issue #660
The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!
⚾ Welcome! Today is Free Friday!⚾
NOTE: The Baseball Buffet has moved in 2026 to a tiered model, with free subscribers receiving a shortened daily edition, and paid All-Star subscribers receiving the full buffet each day. The exception is Free Fridays, when everyone gets the full issue!
We only had a partial slate of games yesterday (9), as some teams were traveling or otherwise had the day off. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
SDP 4, PHI 6 - PHI SP Zack Wheeler pitched well again (7 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K), allowing a 2-run HR to Manny Machado in the seventh. That cut the Phillies' lead to 3-2, but then Philadelphia scored three more in the bottom of the seventh to build it back up again. Jackson Merrill hit a 2-run HR in the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough. Adolis García hit a HR for the Phillies, while Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott had two hits apiece.
BAL 8, BOS 2 - The Orioles tagged BOS SP Brayan Bello for six runs in the top of the first inning, and then added two more in the fifth (5 IP, 7 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Meanwhile, BAL SP Trevor Rogers had his best start since his first game of the year (5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and Baltimore's bullpen kept the Red Sox from scoring until Willson Contreras hit an inconsequential HR in the bottom of the ninth. Taylor Ward went 3-5 with a double, and Pete Alonso went 2-4 with a walk. Of note, according to an article by Ian Browne at MLB, Brayan Bello is being optioned to AAA for the time being after this latest rough outing.
CLE 1, NYY 2 - Both starting pitchers allowed only one run over six innings: CLE SP Slade Cecconi (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and NYY SP Carlos Rodón (6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K). In the bottom of the seventh the Yankees manufactured a go-ahead run: Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, and then with two stole second base. Guardians reliever Codi Heuer threw a wild pitch and Chisholm Jr. advanced to third, and then scored when Ryan McMahon singled. Fernando Cruz threw a scoreless eighth inning, and then David Bednar did the same in the ninth, earning his 13th save of the year.
SFG 12, MIL 9 - The Giants jumped to an early lead with six runs off MIL SP Coleman Crow in his fourth major league start (2.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Still leading 6-3 after six innings, they scored six more in the seventh inning off Brewers relievers Grant Anderson and Jake Woodford, including a grand slam by Eric Haase. Casey Schmitt went 2-5 with a HR and 2 RBI; Jung Hoo Lee went 4-5 with a double and 3 runs; Bryce Eldridge was 3-4 with a walk and 2 runs; Matt Chapman went 3-5 with a double and 2 RBI; and Luis Arraez, Willy Adames, and Drew Gilbert had two hits apiece. The Brewers scored six runs over the last three innings, but came up short in the end. Jackson Chourio led the way by going 3-4 with a walk, 2 HR, 4 runs, and 4 RBI; David Hamilton hit a solo HR, and Christian Yelich and Brice Turang each had a double and a single.
TOR 7, ATL 2 - The Blue Jays roughed up ATL SP Chris Sale (5.2 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), scoring three runs in the third and collecting ten hits overall off the Braves' ace. They did the same to Reynaldo López in the ninth (1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 3-5 with a double and 2 runs; Ernie Clement was 3-5; Tyler Heineman was 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI; and Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes, and Myles Straw each had two hits apiece. Meanwhile, Mason Fluharty pitched as an opener for Toronto and took care of the first four outs, setting up 25-year-old Chad Dallas' major league debut (3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Four other Blue Jays pitchers combined to hold the Braves to only four hits, with Louis Varland securing a four-out save, his 9th of the season. He now owns a microscopic 0.28 ERA on the season, as he has only allowed 1 ER in 32.1 IP. Of note, Braves utility-man Mauricio Dubón hit a HR for the second day in a row (he played SS yesterday and LF on Wednesday).
KCR 8, MIN 6 - The Twins scored exactly one run in each of the first six innings, including five off KCR SP Seth Lugo (5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Byron Buxton hit a leadoff HR to get things going for Minnesota in the bottom of the first, then Kody Clemens hit solo HRs in both the third and fifth innings, and then Victor Caratini hit one in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Royals also scored six runs in the first six innings, including a solo HR by Michael Massey in the fourth. The game was still tied 6-6 through eight, when the Royals plated two runs in the top of the ninth off Twins reliever Taylor Rogers. Alex Lange then came in for the bottom of the ninth and kept Minnesota from scoring to earn his second save.
ATH 6, CHC 7 - ATH SP J.T. Ginn pitched well (6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K), allowing a HR to Pete Crow-Armstrong in the sixth. Meanwhile, CHC SP Shota Imanaga pitched into the seventh inning (6 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), but coughed up four HRs including two by Shea Langeliers (one of which was an inside-the-park HR), and one each by Tyler Soderstrom and Jonah Heim. The Cubs were down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, when Ian Happ hit a 2-run HR off A's reliever Scott Barlow. The game was still 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, and the A's brought in Joel Kuhnel to try and close it out. He gave up two doubles and three singles and was eventually removed in favor of Luis Medina. He immediately allowed a single to Dansby Swanson which drove in Kevin Alcantara to tie the game 6-6, and then a walk-off single by Crow-Armstrong for the Cubs' comeback win.
PIT 5, HOU 1 - PIT SP Jared Jones pitched better in his second start of the year (5 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), and Carmen Mlodzinski did well also in long relief (4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), only giving up a HR to Isaac Paredes in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Pirates scored one in the first and four in the sixth, all off HOU SP Kai-Wei Teng (5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). Ryan O'Hearn was 2-4 with a HR and 3 RBI; Brandon Lowe went 2-5 with 2 doubles and 2 runs; and Oneil Cruz was 2-2 with 2 walks.
LAD 2, ARI 3 - LAD SP Justin Wrobleski pitched six shutout innings (6 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K), lowering his ERA on the year to 2.62. ARI SP Ryne Nelson also did fairly well (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), and two D-backs relievers kept the Dodgers off the board in the final two innings. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Arizona scored two including a solo HR by Corbin Carroll. Then with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Tanner Scott gave up a walk-off HR to Ketel Marte, his 11th longball of the year.

Standings
Here are the current MLB standings, with thanks to the website Plain Text Sports for the formatting. (See also the official, more detailed standings at MLB here.)
The Rays have lost three in a row, and 8 of their last 10, while the Yankees have won 7 of their last 10 and so are now only a half game back in the AL East.
While both teams are significantly behind the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks are now in second place in the NL West as the Padres have lost 9 of their last 10.

Who’s on the move?
In this section I won’t list 26th-man moves, or every time a team shuttles relievers back and forth to AAA to keep a stock of fresh arms in the bullpen. I’ll mostly focus on the biggest, most impactful injury list changes (for a full list, see all the latest MLB transactions).
📄 Free Agent Signings
HOU 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr.

Also of note: While he hasn’t been listed on the IL yet, Aaron Judge apparently will be out for many weeks with a fracture in his ribs, according to an article by Bryan Hoch at MLB.

Today’s Trivia Question
One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Ray Lankford. He had five seasons with 20+ HR and 20+ SB while playing with the Cardinals. No other Cardinals player has had more than one such 20/20 season. There have been five Cardinals players who each did it once —how many can you name?
Trivia answers are always provided towards the bottom of each issue of The Baseball Buffet.
On this day in baseball history…
Here is what stands out to me for this day in baseball history. All quoted descriptions are from baseball-reference.com.
📅 On June 5…
1937: The Cardinals sign Stan Musial. "The St. Louis Cardinals sign 16-year-old Stan Musial to his first professional contract; he is still a pitcher at this point of his career."
1966: Stargell goes 5-5 and 9-9. "In a 10 - 5 Pittsburgh win over the Astros, Willie Stargell goes 5 for 5, giving him nine consecutive hits in two days, while Roberto Clemente hits his second 500-foot home run of the year."
1969: Burroughs and Richard are #1 and #2. "The Washington Senators name Jeff Burroughs the number one pick in the amateur draft. Houston chooses pitcher James Rodney Richard of Ruston, LA as the second pick; Richard has a 21-0 mark in his three years at Ruston High School. Cincinnati picks Ken Griffey in the 29th round, while the Kansas City Royals, with a record 90 picks, take Al Cowens with their 84th choice."
1982: Cal Ripken’s consecutive innings-played streak begins. "Cal Ripken's span of 8,243 consecutive innings begins with the Orioles' 3 - 1 victory over Minnesota at the Metrodome. The infielder's record streak, which will last for 904 games, will end when he is lifted in the 8th inning for a pinch runner during an 18 - 3 September loss to the Blue Jays in 1987."
1983: Chili Davis hits HRs from both sides. "Chili Davis is first Giants switch-hitter to hit homers from both sides of the plate in the same game. However, the Giants still lose, 12 - 9, to the Expos."
1989: The SkyDome opens. "The Toronto SkyDome opens, but the Blue Jays lose, 5 - 3, to the Milwaukee Brewers. Baseball's newest and most modern stadium features a $100 million fully retractable roof, a hotel with some rooms having a view of the playing field, the world's largest video display board, and a Hard Rock Cafe."

11-year major league pitching career, spanning from 1899-1909, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Highlanders
He had 20+ wins five times, including leading the NL in wins with a 28-6 record in 1902. His best season came in 1904 when he went an amazing 41-12 for New York, with a 1.82 ERA over 454.2 IP.

Ray Lankford (1967)
14-year major league career, spanning from 1990-2004, mostly as a CF and LF with the St. Louis Cardinals

"I think the spitball [is] the greatest ball that was ever discovered. I don't say it is the greatest ball used, but it is the greatest ball for me, and that is why I use it."
⚾ Enjoy the games today! ⚾
