⚾ Welcome! ⚾
Yesterday we had more than a full slate of games (16) as there was a double-header to make up a game rained out on Monday. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
BAL 6, LAA 7 (10) - Jorge Soler hit a 2-run HR in the first off BAL SP Trey Gibson (4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). The Orioles came right back with five runs in the next two innings off LAA SP José Soriano (3 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), including two, 2-run HRs by Samuel Basallo. Baltimore was ahead 5-2 through seven, but then Rico Garcia gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth, and the game eventually went into extras.
The Orioles scored one in the top of the tenth, and Keegan Akin entered to pitch the bottom of the inning. He got two outs, though the automatic runner advanced to third. Nolan Schanuel hit a grounder to second, but Akin couldn't catch the toss when he covered first base. The automatic runner scored, but the ball skipped away and Schanuel advanced all the way to third. Then Logan O'Hoppe hit a check-swing dribbler down the third base line, Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo got to it, but Schanuel raced home and evaded being tagged to score the game-winner. Pete Alonso was 3-4 with a double and Taylor Ward was 2-5 with a double in the Baltimore loss.CHC 10, NYM 3 (Gm 1) - NYM SP Nolan McLean did well at first and had 9 K over 6 innings, but then allowed three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings (7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB). That included a 2-run HR by Michael Busch and a 3-run HR by Dansby Swanson, with Swanson--hitting out of the ninth spot in the lineup--also connecting for a grand slam in the eighth against Mets reliever Jonathan Pintaro. CHC SP Javier Assad gave up HRs to Jared Young and Francisco Alvarez, but did well enough (5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) as three Cubs relievers threw four scoreless frames to keep the Mets from doing any further damage.
CHC 10, NYM 5 (Gm 2) - The Mets took an early 3-1 lead in the game two, powered by HRs by Francisco Alvarez and AJ Ewing in the second inning. The Cubs came back with three runs in the fourth, but then the Mets tied the game 4-4 with a Mark Vientos solo HR in the bottom of the inning off CHC SP Shota Imanaga (5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Bo Bichette added one more HR for New York, but the Cubs scored six runs from the sixth inning onward. Nico Hoerner went 3-5 with 3 doubles and 3 runs; Pedro Ramírez went 3-5 with a double, 4 runs, and 2 RBI; and Dansby Swanson--again hitting out of the ninth spot in the lineup--went 3-5 with a triple and 4 RBI. That gave Swanson an impressive 11 RBI in the double-header, and 15 RBI in the first three games of this four-game series.
ATH 1, SFG 2 - SFG SP Tyler Mahle didn't allow any runs in over five innings of work (5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), with the Athletics only scoring later when Max Muncy hit a solo HR in the eighth. Rookie ATH SP Gage Jump was outstanding with 9 K over 5 IP (3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB), and the A's had a slim 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. They brought in reliever Elvis Alvarado, but he immediately allowed a HR to Rafael Devers which tied the game. He got Willy Adames and Jung Hoo Lee to fly out, but then rookie Victor Bericoto hit a walk-off HR, only his second home run in 22 major league at-bats so far.

Today’s Matchups
As is typical for a Thursday, today we only have a partial slate of games (9), with some teams traveling or otherwise having a day off. Here are a couple of interesting matchups (and here is a link to the full schedule):
TEX MacKenzie Gore vs. TOR Kevin Gausman - both of these pitchers are capable of having great games and lots of strikeouts, but they have also been inconsistent this season
NYY Cam Schlittler vs. BOS Connelly Early - always a fun rivalry matchup, and Schlittler has been outstanding and is a leading AL Cy Young Award candidate
Other starters who are toeing the rubber today include SEA Bryce Miller, KCR Seth Lugo, and PHI Cristopher Sánchez.

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys is Carlos Delgado, so here are some quotes from him:
"There's gonna be good times and bad times. When the good times come you got to ride it as long as you can. And when the bad times come you got to battle and try to get out of there as soon as you can."
"You've got to be smart to stay in this game. The quicker you learn, the quicker you succeed. You can't make the same mistakes over and over again."
"I'm a fastball hitter. It's no secret I'm looking for a fastball every pitch. I think it's one of the hardest things to do in sports-to hit a moving baseball."
"I learned the hard way. When I started hitting home runs, I thought, I can hit these pitches. Then I started thinking, if I can do this, I can hit the pitch four inches outside or four inches up. I expanded the zone and got myself out. Pitchers are smart. If they find out they don't have to throw strikes, they won't."
"I'm a simple guy. There's nothing fancy about my life."
"I'm blessed with health and energy and passion for the game of baseball, and also to help children."
