⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday we had a full slate of Tuesday games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • PHI 14, WSH 9 - PHI SP Jesús Luzardo had 13 K in 6.2 innings, but also allowed 6 hits, 3 BB, and 5 runs. Edmundo Sosa hit a 2-run HR for Philadelphia in the fifth inning, but after a 3-run HR by Jorbit Vivas in the bottom of the eighth, the Phillies found themselves down 8-6. The Nationals brought in Brad Lord for the ninth, and he struck out the first two batters he faced. But then the Phillies mounted a truly epic comeback: Trea Turner singled and Brandon Marsh hit a 2-run HR; Bryce Harper and Derek Hill singled, and Bryson Stott hit a 3-run HR; J.T. Realmuto walked, Gabriel Rincones Jr. singled, and Edmundo Sosa hit a 2-RBI double; Justin Crawford walked and Trea Turner singled to drive in Sosa. That added up to eight runs with two outs, giving Philadelphia a 14-8 lead. Chase Shugart allowed a HR to Luis García Jr. in the bottom of the ninth, but then closed out the huge win for Philadelphia.

  • ATH 1, SFG 3 - Jung Hoo Lee hit a 2-run HR in the second inning off ATH SP Aaron Civale (4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). SFG SP Robbie Ray threw eight solid innings (8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 6 K), and Caleb Kilian pitched a scoreless ninth for his 5th save of the year. Lee, Casey Schmitt, and Willy Adames each had two hits for San Francisco. Sadly, Zack Gelof's MLB-leading hitting streak at 24 ended in a painful way as he was 0-1 and then had to come out of the game early when Matt Chapman stepped on his hand on a play at 2B (see the article by Martín Gallegos at MLB for more information and video of the play).

  • HOU 9, TOR 7 (11) - TOR SP Shane Bieber had a rocky first start of the year (3.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K), giving up back-to-back-to-back HRs by Yainer Diaz, Cam Smith, and Taylor Trammell in the fourth inning. Luis Urías got the Blue Jays on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-run HR off HOU SP Peter Lambert (4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K). Daulton Varsho hit a 2-run HR in the seventh to tie the game 4-4, and Toronto went ahead with two runs in the eighth. The Astros scored two in the top of the ninth to tie the game 6-6, and Josh Hader pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to force extras. Neither team scored in the 10th, but then Joey Loperfido hit a 3-run HR in the top of the 11th off Blue Jays reliever Braydon Fisher. In the bottom of the 11th, Kazuma Okamoto singled to drive in the automatic runner, but then Astros reliever Logan VanWey closed it out.

Today’s Trivia Question

One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is reliever Doug Jones. He had 303 career saves, with 223 of them coming during the decade of the 1990s. That placed him just outside the top-10 for saves during that decade. How many of the top-10 in saves in the 1990s can you name?

(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Doug Jones, so here are two good quotes from him:

"Someone like me, who doesn’t throw hard, can give up cheap hits and drag things out. Meanwhile the manager’s heart rate is about 100 miles per hour and his blood pressure’s going up."

"I've seen a lot of guys with more talent than me, who didn’t make it, throw their hands up in the air in frustration and walk away from the game. And once or twice in my career I've felt like quitting. But what would that prove? Only that I didn’t have the fortitude to stay with it."

Enjoy the games today!
