⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday we had a partial slate of Monday games (13), with one being postponed due to inclement weather. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • MIL 2, CIN 1 (10) - Rare in the hitter's ballpark in Cincinnati, this game was a great pitcher's duel between MIL SP Brandon Woodruff (6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K) and CIN SP Brady Singer (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K). Both bullpens kept it up and with no runs scored through nine the game went into extras. Tony Santillan came in for the Reds and walked Garrett Mitchell. Sal Frelick then hit a sacrifice bunt that moved runners over to second and third. With only one out, Joey Ortiz then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Mitchell then scored on a wild pitch before Santillan could get out of the inning. In the bottom of the tenth, Joel Kuhnel came in for the Brewers and got JJ Bleday to ground out with the automatic runner advancing to third on the play. Another ground out by Sal Stewart drove in a run, but then Kuhnel closed it out for his 5th save.

  • BOS 2, COL 3 - COL SP Ryan Feltner pitched fairly well, finally giving up two runs in the sixth inning (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K). BOS SP Jake Bennett was outstanding in his fifth major league start (6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K). Down 2-0, the Rockies had four consecutive singles in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't score as one runner was thrown out at home, and another was thrown out at third. Boston closer Aroldis Chapman came in for the ninth, but the Rockies kept hitting with consecutive singles by TJ Rumfield, Hunter Goodman, and Cole Carrigg to load the bases. Jake McCarthy then hit a walk-off triple for the comeback victory. Read the article by Michael Kelly at MLB for video footage and to learn more about this rare feat.

  • CLE 5, CWS 6 - Both starting pitchers did well and had 8 strikeouts each: CLE SP Gavin Williams (5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) and CWS SP Anthony Kay (6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K). Randall Grichuk hit a solo HR in the sixth inning to put the White Sox up 3-0, but the Guardians scored three to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Chicago immediately scored one more after the stretch, but then Cleveland later scored two off White Sox closer Seranthony Domínguez in the top of the ninth to go up 5-4. The Guardians had already brought in their closer, and MLB saves leader, Cade Smith, for the eighth. They decided to stick with him for the ninth as well, but after getting one out he walked Braden Montgomery and allowed a double to Tristan Peters. Jacob Gonzalez struck out, but then Sam Antonacci hit a two-out walk-off single that drove in two for the win.

Today’s Matchups

Today we have a typical full slate of Tuesday games (15), with the following as two interesting matchups (and here is a link to the full schedule):

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Tom Haller, so here is a funny one from him:

"Reduce the load of juice Gaylord (Perry), (umpire Ed) Sudol's getting suspicious of that splashing sound in my mitt."
