⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday we had a full slate of Sunday games (15), though one was postponed due to inclement weather. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • CWS 4, DET 5 (10) - CWS SP Davis Martin had another quality outing (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), while DET SP Keider Montero did fairly well also (7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), giving up a 2-run HR to Luisangel Acuña in the sixth. The Tigers were down 3-1 through seven when Dillon Dingler hit a solo HR, his 18th of the year. Then in the ninth the Tigers had three consecutive singles, the last coming from Dingler who tied the game by driving home Jahmai Jones from third. The White Sox scored one in the top of the tenth, but then in the bottom of the inning the Tigers again rapped out three singles, with Matt Vierling driving in Riley Greene for the game-winner.

  • STL 12, KCR 10 - Yesterday I suggested that this one could be a pitcher's duel, as both starting pitchers had been doing well lately. That didn't happen, as KCR SP Stephen Kolek was shelled for 9 hits and 9 runs in the first two innings (1.2 IP, 9 H, 9 ER, 1 BB, 0 K), including JJ Wetherholt hitting two HRs and Masyn Winn connecting for a 3-run HR. Meanwhile, STL SP Dustin May gave up six runs in the first two frames (2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), including 2-run HRs by Nick Loftin and Jac Caglianone. Iván Herrera hit a 3-run HR in the fifth to put the Cardinals up 12-7. The Royals tried to come back, with Carter Jensen hitting a solo HR in the sixth, and Caglianone hitting another HR in the ninth, but it wasn't enough.

  • MIL 9, ATL 4 - The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the first, but MIL SP Robert Gasser otherwise had a good game (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K). Meanwhile, the Brewers lit up ATL SP Bryce Elder in the second inning for eight runs, including a 3-run HR by William Contreras. At that point Atlanta decided to give their bullpen a rest and stick with Elder, who at least didn't give up any further runs (6 IP, 12 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Contreras was 4-5 on the day, and Jake Bauers, Sal Frelick, and David Hamilton had two hits apiece. Former Brewers slugger Rowdy Tellez, who was recently picked up by the Braves, hit an inconsequential 2-run HR in the bottom of the ninth.

  • CIN 4, NYY 1

  • WSH 3, TBR 4

  • SFG 1, MIA 2

  • CLE 1, HOU 2

  • SDP 3, TEX 4

  • MIN 4, ARI 2

  • PIT 8, COL 6

  • BOS 1, SEA 3

  • LAA 9, ATH 7

  • BAL 12, LAD 1

  • NYM 2, PHI 6

Today’s Trivia Question

One of today's Birthday Boys is Ian Kinsler. Although he only played 8 of his 14 seasons for the Rangers, he had 1,908 total bases which is good enough to rank ninth on their franchise all-time leaderboard. Can you name the player with the most career total bases for the Rangers franchise? And how many of the eight players can you name that have had 2,000+ total bases for the Rangers franchise (which includes their time from 1961-1971 as the second iteration of the AL's Washington Senators)?

(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Carl Hubbell, Ian Kinsler, Josh Naylor

Currently active players who were born on June 22 include BAL Tyler O'Neill, PIT Tyler Calihan, and COL Troy Johnston.

Today’s Matchups

Today we have more games than usual for a Monday, with 13 contests so only four teams have the day off (SEA, ATH, PIT, SFG). Here are two interesting matchups (and here is a link to the full schedule):

  • NYY Gerrit Cole vs. DET Framber Valdez - Valdez did well in his last outing, but will be tested against the Yankees lineup today, and in facing Cole as his opponent

  • KCR Michael Wacha vs. TBR Drew Rasmussen - Rasmussen has been outstanding in his last three starts, with 29 K and only 1 BB over 21 IP, allowing only one earned run (0.43 ERA).

Additional starters throwing today include HOU Hunter Brown, CHC Shota Imanaga, and CLE Gavin Williams.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys is Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell, so here are a few quotes from him (curated from the collection at The Baseball Almanac):

"A fellow doesn't last long on what he has done. He has to keep on delivering."

"I slipped (during the 1936 World Series) and the ball got away from me with nothing on it. Maybe it's lucky it hit Lou (Gehrig), instead of going over the plate."

"The screwball's an unnatural pitch. Nature never intended a man to turn his hand like that throwing rocks at a bear."

"They talk about those All-Star Games being exhibition affairs, and maybe they are, but I've seen very few players in my life who didn't want to win, no matter whom they were playing or what for. If I'm playing cards for pennies, I want to win. How can you feel any other way?"

Enjoy the games today!
