⚾ Welcome! ⚾
First, a big Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, including all the fathers among major league players, managers, and coaches!
Yesterday we had a nearly full slate of Saturday games (14), with only the Royals and Cardinals off due to a World Cup scheduling conflict. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
MIL 3, ATL 4 - Both starting pitchers did well: ATL SP Chris Sale (5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) and MIL SP Kyle Harrison (6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K). One of the runs Harrison allowed was a solo HR by Ozzie Albies in the fifth. The Brewers were ahead 3-2 after eight innings, and having already used Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill, turned to Aaron Ashby for the bottom of the ninth. He struck out Drake Baldwin, but then allowed a single to Matt Olson and a 2-run walk-off HR by Albies who was 3-4 on the day.
MIN 16, ARI 8 - The Twins jumped out to a 6-0 lead through four innings, but then put up 10 more runs in the fifth, including a grand slam by Byron Buxton, his 24th HR of the season. That was the only HR that Minnesota had amongst their 20 hits, 12 of which came at the expense of ARI SP Zac Gallen (4 IP, 12 H, 9 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), who now has a 6.10 ERA on the year. MIN SP Taj Bradley did fairly well (5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), giving up a 2-run HR to Jorge Barrosa in the fifth. The D-Backs scored five more in the seventh inning, but it was too-little, too-late given the Twins' onslaught, which including Brooks Lee going 4-6 with a triple and a double; Victor Caratini who was 3-5 with a walk, a double, 3 runs, and 3 RBI; and Luke Keaschall and Ryan Kreidler who had 3 hits apiece.
NYM 3, PHI 15 - The Phillies pounded NYM SP Freddy Peralta for 10 hits and 10 runs (2.2 IP, 10 H, 10 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), and then didn't let up against the Mets relievers that followed him (except for position player Zack Short who somehow threw a scoreless ninth at the end). Philadelphia tallied 17 hits in all, with Bryce Harper hitting for the cycle in going 4-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. Kyle Schwarber hit 3 HRs, including twice in one inning (and giving him an MLB-leading 28 on the year), going 4-5 with 4 runs and 6 RBI. Trea Turner was 2-5 with 3 runs; J.T. Realmuto went 2-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 2 RBI; and Justin Crawford was 2-3 with a walk and a double. Meanwhile, PHI SP Cristopher Sánchez did well as usual (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), only allowing a HR by Mark Vientos in the fourth inning. Carson Benge also had a HR late in the game for the Mets.
PIT 1, COL 2 - Spencer Horwitz led off the game with a HR, but then COL SP Tomoyuki Sugano settled in after that (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). Similarly, Jake McCarthy led off the bottom of the first with an inside-the-park HR off PIT SP Paul Skenes, who then struck out 8 over 6 IP (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K). The Pirates were down 2-1 in the ninth, but managed to load the bases from a Brandon Lowe double, Bryan Reynolds single, and then Nick Gonzales being hit by a pitch. With two outs Jake Mangum hit a grounder to the left side that was fielded by 3B Kyle Karros. Billy Cook, who had replaced Bryan Reynolds as a pinch-runner, accidentally clipped Karros' glove and so after an umpire review was called out to end the game (learn more in the article at MLB).

Today’s Trivia Question
As noted above, Kyle Schwarber hit three HRs in the Phillies rout of the Mets. That was Schwarber’s fifth game with 3+ HR in his career, which is the second most among active players. Which active player has hit 3+ HR in a game six times?
(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)
🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Eddie Lopat, Rick Sutcliffe, Garrett Crochet

Today’s Matchups
Today we have a typical full slate of Sunday games (15), with the following looking like interesting matchups (and here is a link to the full schedule):
STL Dustin May vs. KCR Steven Kolek - May threw a one-hitter in his last outing and hasn't allowed a run in his last 15 IP, while Kolek also threw a complete game earlier this year and owns a 2.68 ERA over eight starts.
TOR Dylan Cease vs. CHC Shota Imanaga - Cease has been as advertised in his first season with the Jays, with a 2.71 ERA and 110 K in 73 IP so far. Imanaga has been consistent this season, but in his last two starts he has 10 K and only 1 earned run allowed in 10.2 IP.
BOS Payton Tolle vs. SEA Logan Gilbert - Tolle has done pretty well this year, but has given up 7 ER over 11 IP in his last two starts. Gilbert has posted 15 K in 13 IP with only two earned runs allowed in his last two starts.
Additional starters taking the mound today include CIN Chase Burns, TBR Nick Martinez, SFG Logan Webb, TEX Nathan Eovaldi, LAA Reid Detmers, and PHI Zack Wheeler.
Also of note, 24-year-old Jose Cabrera is set to make his major league debut today for the Diamondbacks against the Twins.

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Rick Sutcliffe, so here is a nice one from him:
"After the game, Ryno [Ryne Sandberg] and I would sign autographs every night. Win or lose, it didn't matter. We knew we owed it to the fans for everything they were giving us."
