⚾ Welcome! ⚾
Yesterday we had a nearly full slate of Friday games (14), with only the Mets and Phillies off due to a World Cup scheduling conflict. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
TOR 2, CHC 16 - TOR SP Kevin Gausman had a brutal first inning in which he gave up four walks, three singles, a double, and a grand slam hit by Carson Kelly. That all resulted in seven runs scoring, the Blue Jays never recovered as CHC SP Ben Brown again pitched a good game (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K), allowing a HR to George Springer in the sixth. The Cubs had 18 hits in total, with Pete Crow-Armstrong going 3-3 with 2 walks; Seiya Suzuki was 3-5 with a double; and Nico Hoerner was 3-6 with a double.
CIN 0, NYY 5 - NYY SP Cam Schlittler was outstanding, striking out 13 over 6 innings (4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB), with three Yankees relievers combining for a 4-hit shutout. Meanwhile, the Yankees did most of their damage with four runs in the second inning off CIN SP Rhett Lowder (5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), including a solo HR by Jazz Chisholm Jr., and a 3-run HR by Ben Rice, his 21st of the season.
LAA 11, ATH 12 (10) - This one was a slugfest with 23 hits, including 9 HRs, resulting in 23 runs. The Athletics got off to a 4-0 lead after three innings, including Lawrence Butler hitting a HR in the second off LAA SP José Soriano (5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K). But the Angels came back with seven runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. During those innings they had HRs from Denzer Guzman, José Siri, Zach Neto, and Logan O'Hoppe, and then Nolan Schanuel added a solo HR in the sixth also to give the Angels an 11-4 lead. But the A's didn't give up and chipped away at the Angels bullpen with one run in the sixth, and then 2-run HRs by Jacob Wilson, Max Muncy, and Jonah Heim in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, respectively. The home run by Heim forced extra innings with the score tied 11-11.
Elvis Alvarado had already pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for the A's, and he did the same again in the tenth also. The Angels brought in veteran Kirby Yates, and he walked Henry Bolte. Lawrence Butler was the automatic runner on second, and he stole third base, with Bolte also advancing to second. Yates got one out, but then hit Zack Gelof with a pitch to load the bases. Rookie Samy Natera Jr. then entered, making only his fourth major appearance in a very challenging situation. Nick Kurtz, who leads the majors in walks, was able to work a walk-off walk for the Athletics victory.PIT 3, COL 4

Baseball Quote of the Day
Yesterday I shared a few quotes from Birthday Boy Lou Gehrig. Today I'll share some good quotes from others about Lou Gehrig (curated from the collection at The Baseball Almanac):
"(Lou) Gehrig had one advantage over me. He was a better ballplayer." - Gil Hodges
"(Lou) Gehrig never learned that a ballplayer couldn't be good every day." - Hank Gowdy
"His greatest record doesn't show in the book. It was the absolute reliability of Henry Louis Gehrig. He could be counted upon. He was there every day at the ballpark bending his back and ready to break his neck to win for his side. He was there day after day and year after year. He never sulked or whined or went into a pot or a huff. He was the answer to a manager's dream." - Sportswriter John Kieran in The New York Times
"Lou Gehrig was a guy who could really hit the ball, was dependable and seemed so durable that many of us thought he could have played forever." - George Selkirk
"Lou Gehrig was to baseball what Gary Cooper was to the movies: a figure of unimpeachable integrity, massive and incorruptible, a hero. Today, both are seen as paradigms of manly virtue. Decent and God-fearing, yet strongly charismatic and powerful." - Kevin Nelson in The Greatest Stories Ever Told About Baseball (1986)
"I would not have traded two minutes of the joy and the grief with that man for two decades of anything with another." - Eleanor Gehrig
