Issue #674

The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!

⚾ Welcome! Today is Free Friday!⚾

NOTE: The Baseball Buffet has moved in 2026 to a tiered model, with free subscribers receiving a shortened daily edition, and paid All-Star subscribers receiving the full buffet each day. The exception is Free Fridays, when everyone gets the full issue!

We only had a partial slate of games yesterday (9), as some teams were traveling or otherwise had the day off. One game ended up being postponed, but here are the results of the other contests (link to all game box scores):

  • CWS 5, NYY 1 - Each team scored one run early: Colson Montgomery hit a solo HR in the second off NYY SP Ryan Weathers (6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K), and Ryan McMahon hit a solo HR off Sean Burke (7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K). With the game tied 1-1 through seven, Andrew Benintendi came through with a pinch-hit go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning. Burke was still going strong as the White Sox long-man after Bryan Hudson opened for the first five outs, so they stuck with him and he closed out the game for the win.

  • STL 6, KCR 14 - Bobby Witt Jr. hit a solo HR in the bottom of the first inning, and then the Royals exploded for six runs in the second off STL SP Matthew Liberatore (1.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K). They scored in four more innings after that, and collected 17 hits overall. Salvador Perez went 3-5 with a HR and a double; Starling Marte was 3-5 with a double; Carter Jensen was 2-5 with 2 doubles; Nick Loftin was 2-5 with 2 doubles; and Witt, Lane Thomas, and Isaac Collins had two hits apiece. Meanwhile, KCR SP Noah Cameron did not have his best start of the year (5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), but he and two Royals relievers scattered 13 hits to limit the damage. For the Cardinals, JJ Wetherholt went 3-4 with 2 walks and a double; Masyn Winn was 3-5 with a double, and Blaze Jordan, Jordan Walker, and José Fermín had two hits each.

  • TOR 4, BOS 3 - The Blue Jays scored two runs early, including a solo HR by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (his first HR since May 17th). Nathan Lukes also hit a solo HR in the seventh off BOS SP Sonny Gray in his last inning of work (7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). TOR SP Trey Yesavage (7.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) had thrown six scoreless frames, but then allowed a run in the seventh, and back-to-back HRs in the eighth by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Caleb Durbin. Boston brought in closer Aroldis Chapman for the top of the ninth, and Ernie Clement led off the inning with a single. Chapman recorded two outs, but then Brandon Valenzuela hit a double that drove Clement home. Mason Fluharty came in for Toronto and got three straight outs to notch his first save of the year.

  • CLE 4, MIL 2 - MIL SP Shane Drohan pitched well over five innings (5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), only giving up a solo HR to David Fry in the third. But then Kyle Manzardo hit a solo HR in the sixth, and Travis Bazzana did the same as part of a two-run seventh inning. Meanwhile, CLE SP Parker Messick had 9 K in 6 IP (4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB), and four Cleveland relievers threw three scoreless innings, including Cade Smith who locked down his MLB-leading 24th save.

  • MIN 9, TEX 3 - TEX SP Jack Leiter struggled in this one (4 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), giving up a 3-run HR to Brooks Lee in the first, and a 2-run HR to Trevor Larnach in the fourth. MIN SP Joe Ryan had 7 strikeouts over 5 scoreless innings (3 H, 2 BB). The Twins bullpen gave up three solo HRs to Wyatt Langford, Ezequiel Duran, and Justin Foscue, but that is all the Rangers would come up with. Larnach and Victor Caratini each had three hits for the Twins, and Ryan Kreidler hit a 2-run HR late in the game.

  • BAL 0, SEA 3 - The Mariners put up three runs in the bottom of the first off BAL SP Shane Baz before he settled in for seven otherwise strong innings (7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K). But that is all the scoring it would take, as SEA SP Bryan Woo threw seven scoreless frames (7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K), and then Eduard Bazardo and Andrés Muñoz combined for a 3-hit shutout.

  • NYM 6, PHI 4 - Juan Soto hit HRs in the first and third innings against PHI SP Aaron Nola (5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). With the game tied 3-3, New York scored three in the top of the seventh against Phillies José Alvarado, including a 2-run triple by Marcus Semien. Mets reliever Devin Williams entered to close out the game in the ninth, and allowed one run, but eventually secured his 11th save. New York rookies Carson Benge and AJ Ewing went went 3-5 and 2-3 with a double, respectively.

  • LAA 0, ATH 5 - 23-year-old rookie ATH SP Gage Jump had the best start of his young career (7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K), and two Athletics relievers combined for the 4-hit shutout. Meanwhile, the A's scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning off LAA SP Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), including back-to-back HRs from Shea Langeliers (his 19th of the year) and Tyler Soderstrom (his 13th).

  • SFG vs. ATL - postponed, makeup game will be on August 31

Standings

Here are the current MLB standings, with thanks to the website Plain Text Sports for the formatting. (See also the official, more detailed standings at MLB here.)

Who’s on the move?

In this section I won’t list 26th-man moves, or every time a team shuttles relievers back and forth to AAA to keep a stock of fresh arms in the bullpen. I’ll mostly focus on the biggest, most impactful injury list changes (for a full list, see all the latest MLB transactions).

🤕 Injured Lists

  • LAA CF Mike Trout - 10-day IL (right hamstring strain)

  • CWS RF Everson Pereira - 7-day IL (concussion)

➡️ Trades

  • The Pirates traded C Joey Bart to the Braves for RP Hunter Stratton - The Pirates need bullpen help, and are familiar with Stratton as they drafted him in 2017 and he pitched for Pittsburgh from 2023-25. With Joey Bart coming back from the IL, they were going to have a logjam at catcher, as they still like their homegrown duo of Henry Davis (defense) and Endy Rodríguez (has shown flashes as a hitter). For Atlanta, presumably Bart gives the Braves a solid catcher option to complement Drake Baldwin while Sean Murphy is injured, and allow Baldwin to still be a DH at times also.

📄 Free Agent Signings

  • PHI RP Kolby Allard

MLB Leaders

As noted above, Cleveland’s Cade Smith added to his major league lead in saves so far this year:

  • 24 - CLE Cade Smith

  • 18 - STL Riley O’Brien

  • 18 - ARI Paul Sewald

  • 14 - NYY David Bednar

  • 14 - BOS Aroldis Chapman

  • 14 - ATL Raisel Iglesias

  • 14 - TOR Louis Varland

Current Hitting Streaks

The following players are on active hit streaks of seven or more games:

  • 22 - ATH Zack Gelof

  • 11 - ATH Nick Kurtz

  • 10 - KCR Carter Jensen

  • 10 - NYY Paul Goldschmidt

  • 9 - MIA Liam Hicks

Today’s Trivia Question

Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski is pitching today, and he is currently the NL and overall major league leader in strikeouts with 131. Who is the only Brewers’ pitcher to have led the NL in strikeouts in a season?

Trivia answers are always provided towards the bottom of each issue of The Baseball Buffet.

On this day in baseball history…

Here is what stands out to me for this day in baseball history. All quoted descriptions are from baseball-reference.com.

📅 On June 19…

  • 1900: Clark Griffith and Rube Waddell have an epic duel. "In a great pitching duel, Clark Griffith of the Chicago Orphans and Rube Waddell of the Pittsburgh Pirates match shutouts during 13 innings, before Griffith's double in the bottom of the 14th drives in the only run. Waddell strikes out 12."

  • 1927: Jack Scott pitches two complete games in a doubleheader. "Jack Scott of the Philadelphia Phillies performs an ironman feat by pitching two complete games in a doubleheader, beating the Cincinnati Reds, 3 - 1, before losing, 3 - 0. Scott is the last pitcher in major league history to complete two games on the same day."

  • 1952: Carl Erskine throws a no-hitter. " Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitches a 5 - 0 no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs at Ebbets Field."

  • 1974: Steve Busby throws his second no-hitter. "Steve Busby of the Kansas City Royals pitches his second no-hitter in 14 months, a 2 - 0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Busby strikes out three batters and walks George Scott to lead off the 2nd inning for the Brewers' only baserunner."

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Lou Gehrig, Jacob deGrom, Eddie Cicotte, Jerry Reuss

Lou Gehrig (1903-1941)

  • Hall of Famer

  • 17-year major league career, spanning from 1923-1939, all with the New York Yankees

  • A power hitter who batted cleanup behind Babe Ruth for the "Murderers Row" Yankees of the late 20s and early 30s, Gehrig led the AL in HR three times and RBI five times, including a still AL-record high of 185 RBI in 1931.

  • He won the AL Triple Crown in 1934 when he hit 49 HR with 166 RBI and a .363 average.

  • He also led the AL in runs scored four times, doubles twice, triples once, and walks three times.

  • He was AL MVP twice, in 1927 and 1936, and came in the top five another seven times.

  • He starred in the postseason also, hitting 10 HR in 34 World Series games, with an impressive .361/.483/.731 slash line in 150 plate appearances.

  • He would have played longer if not for the progressive neurodegenerative disease named Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which came to be known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Ironically, he was nicknamed the Iron Horse as he famously had the longest consecutive games played streak (2,130), only broken decades later by Cal Ripken.

  • Overall had 493 HR, 163 triples, 1,888 runs, 1,995 RBI, a .340/.447/.632 slash line, and a 179 OPS+

Jacob deGrom (1988)

  • 9th round draft pick in 2010 by the Mets

  • So far has had a 13-year major league pitching career, spanning from 2014-2026, with the Mets and Rangers

  • He has arguably been the most effective pitcher of his generation... when he's been on the field. Injuries have been an issue over the years, but deGrom has also managed to take home the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2014, and consecutive NL Cy Young Awards in 2018 and 2019.

  • Four-time All-Star

  • He led the NL with a 1.70 ERA in 2018, then led the NL in strikeouts in both 2019 and the shortened 2020 season.

  • Overall so far he has a 101-69 (.594) record, 1,940 K in 1,616.1 IP, a 2.60 ERA, and a 150 ERA+

Eddie Cicotte (1884-1969)

  • 14-year major league pitching career, spanning from 1905-1920, mostly with the Red Sox and White Sox

  • He was an above average pitcher early in his career with the Red Sox, but then blossomed into a star when he joined the White Sox. A knuckleball specialist, Cicotte was 18-11 with a 1.58 ERA in 1913, and then went 28-12 with a 1.53 ERA in 1917.

  • He was again outstanding in 1919 going 29-7 with a 1.82 ERA, but then his career was forever tarnished by his being one of the eight alleged participants in the Black Sox gambling scandal in the 1919 World Series, in which the heavily favored White Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds.

  • In 1920 he posted a 20-10 record and 3.26 ERA, but then Cicotte was banned along with many of his teammates from ever participating in major league baseball again (or having a chance to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame).

  • Overall had a 209-148 (.585) record, a 2.38 ERA, and a 123 ERA+

Jerry Reuss (1949)

  • 2nd round draft pick in 1967 by the Cardinals

  • 22-year major league pitching career, spanning from 1969-1990, spending nine years with the Dodgers, six with the Pirates, and the rest spread across six other clubs

  • Two-time All-Star

  • Had eight seasons with 14-18 wins each, and came in second in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 1980 with an 18-6 record and 2.51 ERA

  • Overall had a 220-191 (.535) record, a 3.64 ERA, and an even 100 ERA+

In addition to Jacob deGrom, currently active players who were born on June 19 include LAA Tyler Heineman, HOU Cody Bolton, NYM Jonah Tong, and TBR Casey Legumina.

Other starters who will be throwing today include TOR Kevin Gausman, DET Tarik Skubal, NYY Cam Schlittler, TEX Jacob deGrom, KCR Seth Lugo, LAA José Soriano, and LAD Roki Sasaki.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, so here are some quotes from him:

"I'm not a headline guy. I know that as long as I was following (Babe) Ruth to the plate I could have stood on my head and no one would have known the difference."

"In the beginning I used to make one terrible play a game. Then I got so I'd make one a week and finally I'd pull a bad one about once a month. Now, I'm trying to keep it down to one a season."

"The ballplayer who loses his head, who can't keep his cool, is worse than no ballplayer at all."

"What are you going to do? Admit to yourself that the pitchers have you on the point of surrender? You can't do that. You must make yourself think that the pitchers are just as good as they always have been or just as bad."

Enjoy the games today!

Today’s Trivia Answer

Corbin Burnes. He had 243 strikeouts in 2022 which led the NL, though not all of baseball as Gerrit Cole of the Yankees had 257 strikeouts that year.
