Issue #667
The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!
⚾ Welcome! Today is Free Friday!⚾
NOTE: The Baseball Buffet has moved in 2026 to a tiered model, with free subscribers receiving a shortened daily edition, and paid All-Star subscribers receiving the full buffet each day. The exception is Free Fridays, when everyone gets the full issue!
We only had a partial slate of games yesterday (8), as some teams were traveling or otherwise had the day off. One game ended up being postponed, but here are the results of the other contests (link to all game box scores):
MIN 0, DET 11 - DET SP Keider Montero pitched well (6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K), and two Tigers relievers combined for a 5-hit shutout. Meanwhile, the Tigers pounced on the Twins for 13 hits, including 6 home runs (although two came late against position player Alex Jackson who threw one inning on the mound). Colt Keith went 2-4 with a HR, 2 runs, and 3 RBI; Dillon Dingler went 3-5 with a double; and Gleyber Torres, Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, Zach McKinstry, and Wenceel Pérez each had a HR.
LAD 8, PIT 6 - The Dodgers got to PIT SP Mitch Keller (4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) in the third and fourth innings, including Shohei Ohtani hitting a solo HR, his 13th of the season. Meanwhile, the Pirates finally scored against LAD SP Justin Wrobleski (4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) in the fifth, with catcher Rafael Flores Jr. hitting his first major league HR, and Brandon Lowe hitting his 16th HR of the season. Tanner Scott closed out the game for Los Angeles with a four-out save, his 7th of the year.
CHC 9, COL 3 - CHC SP Edward Cabrera (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) allowed two solo HRs to Brett Sullivan and rookie Cole Carigg, his first in the major leagues. Meanwhile, the Cubs scored six runs against COL SP Ryan Feltner (4.1 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), including a grand slam by Seiya Suzuki in the fourth. They added three more later from HRs by Alex Bregman and Carson Kelly. Sullivan hit a second, inconsequential HR in the bottom of the ninth, and Troy Johnston went 3-4 with a double in the losing effort.
STL 4, NYM 5 - Alec Burleson hit a solo HR in the top of the first, but then the Mets came back in the bottom of the inning with three runs from HRs by Bo Bichette and Jared Young. The Cardinals retook the lead in the top of the second by similarly scoring three runs from HRs by Lars Nootbaar and Jimmy Crooks. Things settled down after that for both STL SP Hunter Dobbins (4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) and NYM SP Christian Scott (4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). The Mets tied the game 4-4 in the fifth, and then in the seventh Juan Soto hit a go-ahead solo HR, his 14th HR of the year. Mets relievers Luke Weaver and Devin Williams pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively, with Williams earning his 9th save.
ARI 0, MIA 2 - MIA SP Tyler Phillips, who has mostly pitched in relief this year, threw five scoreless innings (5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Four Marlins relievers combined for a 3-hit shutout, including Pete Fairbanks who struck out two in the ninth to earn his 8th save. Meanwhile, ARI SP Merrill Kelly pitched fairly well (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K), but the two runs he allowed were all it took.
TEX 4, KCR 2 - The Rangers scored a run in four different innings against KCR SP Michael Wacha (7 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), including Corey Seager hitting a HR in the third. Brandon Nimmo went 2-4 with 2 doubles, and Ezequiel Duran, Jake Burger, and Elias Díaz had two hits apiece.
SEA 5, BAL 7 - Cole Young led off the game with a HR off BAL SP Kyle Bradish (4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), who went on to give up back-to-back HRs to Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone in the fourth as well. Meanwhile, Bryan Woo (5 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) ran into trouble in the bottom of the third, giving up six runs including HRs by Colton Cowser and Pete Alonso. The Orioles' bullpen kept the Mariners off the board for five innings, with Andrew Kittredge notching his first save of the year.
ATL vs. CWS - postponed, makeup will be on August 20th.

Today’s Trivia Question
As I've been reporting each day, the Giants' Jung Hoo Lee has built up a nice hitting streak. It is now at 18 games, and he has been 36-72 (.500) during that stretch. That has raised his batting average on the season to .338, which is currently second in the NL behind only Miami's Otto Lopez at .344. Can you name the only two players who have won batting titles for the Giants during their time as a team in San Francisco?
Trivia answers are always provided towards the bottom of each issue of The Baseball Buffet.
On this day in baseball history…
Here is what stands out to me for this day in baseball history. All quoted descriptions are from baseball-reference.com.
📅 On June 12…
1880: The first major league perfect game. "At the Worcester Agriculture Fairgrounds, Lee Richmond pitches the first perfect game in major league history, as the Ruby Legs beat Cleveland, 4 - 0. The 23-year-old rookie southpaw threw a no-hitter in a collegiate exhibition against the White Stockings last season."
1884: Anger at umpires has a long history. "Dissatisfied with umpire Jack Brennan's calls, hundreds of fans storm the field at Oriole Park in an American Association game between the Orioles and Louisville Eclipse. One man wielding a large revolver threatens to shoot Brennan if he makes any more bad calls. Police have to be called in to clear the mob, and after the game, which ends in a 4 - 4 tie, Brennan is slugged to the ground by a fan and has to be taken to the Orioles clubhouse, then to OF Jim Clinton's home for his own protection, before being whisked out of town on the first train."
1886: Charlie Sweeney gives up seven home runs. "St. Louis Maroons right-hander Charlie Sweeney, who will give up only nine round-trippers in 93 innings of work this season, sets a major league record when he gives up seven home runs in the team's 14 - 7 loss to the Wolverines at Detroit's Recreation Park. The post-1900 mark is six gopher balls, a dubious distinction shared by a number of pitchers."
1928: Lou Gehrig hits 2 HR and 2 triples. "Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees collects 14 total bases with two triples and two home runs in a 15 - 7 victory over the Chicago White Sox."
1939: Stars gather to dedicate the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. "The Hall of Fame is officially dedicated at Cooperstown, New York. The greatest-ever gathering of members and future inductees of the Hall of Fame accept their plaques: Grover Alexander, Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins, Walter Johnson, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, Babe Ruth, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner and Cy Young."
1957: Stan Musial sets new NL consecutive games played record. "Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals plays in his 823rd game for a new National League record consecutive game streak. The mark beats Gus Suhr's old record. Cardinals hurler Larry Jackson beats the Philadelphia Phillies, 4 - 0, to improve his record to 8-2. He has now beaten every National League team this season."
1970: Dock Ellis throws a no-hitter. "Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis no-hits the San Diego Padres, 2 - 0. Ellis receives all his support on two home runs by Willie Stargell. Ellis will later claim that he was suffering from the after-effects of his previous night's LSD trip while pitching this gem."
1981: The painful 1981 strike begins. "Thirteen games are canceled in the major leagues due to the players' strike, which starts today. It will not be resolved until August, after a third of the season has been lost."
1997: Interleague play begins. "After 126 years of major league play tradition, the first interleague game is played as the San Francisco Giants beat the host Texas Rangers, 4 - 3. Glenallen Hill becomes the National League's first regular season designated hitter."
2007: Justin Verlander throws a no-hitter. "Justin Verlander throws the sixth no-hitter in Detroit Tigers history. Hitting 100 mph on the radar gun in the 9th inning, he shuts down the Brewers with 12 strikeouts, walking four. Magglio Ordonez makes a sliding catch on a shot by Corey Hart in the 7th to keep hope alive and later catches the final out of the contest. It is Detroit's first no-hitter in 23 years, the second no-hitter of the season and the first ever at Comerica Park. Bill Hall is never retired despite batting three times against Verlander, drawing walks every time up."
🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Bill Foster, Hideki Matsui, Ryan Klesko
Bill Foster (1904-1978)
Hall of Famer
14-year major league pitching career in the Negro Leagues, spanning from 1923-1937
According to the data available at baseball-reference.com, Foster led his league in ERA twice, first with a 1.80 ERA in 1926, and then in 1927 with a 2.03 mark when he also led his league in wins with a 21-5 record over 31 games.
Foster was the top vote getter and the winning pitcher in the first East-West All-Star Game in 1933, and was on the All-Star team again in 1934.
Pitching for the Chicago American Giants, he also generally did well in the postseason with a 12-7 record and a 2.54 ERA over 170.1 IP
Overall had a 110-56 (.663) record, a 2.63 ERA, and an impressive 164 ERA+.
Bill Foster was the much younger half-brother of Rube Foster, a Negro League player, pioneer, team owner, and fellow Hall of Famer.
Hideki Matsui (1974)
Began his professional career in his home country of Japan where he was a huge star, hitting 30+ in seven consecutive seasons, including 50 HR in 2002, his final year before coming over to the New York Yankees for his age-29 season.
10-year major league career, spanning from 2003-2012, mostly as a LF and DH for the Yankees.
He was runner-up for the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2003 after hitting 16 HR with 106 RBI and a .287 average

Had 20+ HR six times, with four seasons of 100+ RBI and three with 100+ runs scored
Nicknamed Godzilla, Matsui usually played well in the postseason as well, hitting 10 HR in 56 games with a .312 average, and in 2009 winning the World Series MVP award after he went 8-13 with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
Overall in the majors he had 175 HR, a .282/.360/.462 slash line, and a 118 OPS+. He hit 332 HR in 10 seasons in Japan, so between the two that is 508 HR in total.
Ryan Klesko (1971)
16-year major league career, spanning from 1992-2007, mostly as a LF and 1B with the Braves and Padres
Had 20+ HR eight times, and was an All-Star in 2001 finishing that year with career highs of 30 HR, 113 RBI, and 105 runs
Overall had 278 HR, 987 RBI, a .279/.370/.500 slash line, and a 128 OPS+

"It's not like you can aim for a home run and hit a home run."
⚾ Enjoy the games today! ⚾
