⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday we had a full slate of Wednesday games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • WSH 10, SFG 11 - WSH SP Foster Griffin pitched well (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K), giving up a HR to Matt Chapman in the sixth. The Nationals scored five against SFG SP Robbie Ray (5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), including James Wood hitting a 2-run HR, his 18th HR of the year. They built up a 9-1 lead through the seventh inning, but the Giants battled back, scoring five in the eighth, including back-to-back HRs by Chapman and Rafael Devers. Now ahead 9-6, the Nats got one more from a HR by Curtis Mead in the top of the ninth. They brought in Gus Varland for the bottom of the ninth, but he and Mitchell Parker couldn't get any outs while giving up several hits, a walk, and ultimately a walk-off grand slam by Bryce Eldridge.

  • LAD 8, PIT 9 - The Dodgers scored six runs off the Pirates pitching tandem of Jared Jones (4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and Carmen Mlodzinski (3.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), including a grand slam by Ryan Ward in the sixth inning. They had a 6-1 lead as LAD SP Shohei Ohtani was once again going strong, only allowing a solo HR by rookie Tyler Callihan in the fourth. But the Bucs finally got to him in the seventh, when Brandon Lowe doubled with two outs and two runners on base. Alex Vesia came in for Ohtani, and the Pirates scored another run when Bryan Reynolds reached base due to a Max Muncy fielding error. Having moved past Ohtani, the Pirates unleashed five runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a second HR from Callihan, plus a 2-run HR by Spencer Horwitz. Ohtani had some revenge in the top of the ninth by hitting a 2-run HR off Pittsburgh reliever Gregory Soto, but that is all they'd get as Soto closed it out for his 9th save. Of note, the two HRs for Callihan were his first in the majors.

  • CIN 4, SDP 5 - CIN SP Brady Singer pitched well (6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), while SDP SP Michael King pitched into the seventh inning (6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), but gave up three runs from HRs by Spencer Steer and JJ Bleday. Eugenio Suárez hit a solo HR in the eighth, but the Padres scored two in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 4-4. San Diego reliever Wandy Peralta pitched a scoreless ninth, and then Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a 2-out walk-off HR off rookie Reds reliever Chase Petty for the win.

  • CHC 2, COL 3 - Both starting pitchers did well over five innings of work: CHC SP Shota Imanaga (5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) and COL SP Michael Lorenzen (5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K). Down 1-0, TJ Rumfield hit a 2-run HR in the bottom of the eighth. But then Ian Happ hit a solo HR in the top of the ninth to tie the game 2-2. The Cubs brought in Daniel Palencia for the bottom of the ninth, but he walked Troy Johnston, allowed a single to pinch-hitter Brett Sullivan, and then a walk-off single to Sterlin Thompson which drove in Johnston.

  • HOU 2, LAA 3 - Mike Trout hit his 15th HR of the year in the bottom of the first inning. HOU SP Peter Lambert settled in and pitched well (6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K), with the other run he allowed being a solo HR by Logan O'Hoppe in the fifth. Meanwhile, LAA SP Reid Detmers was outstanding, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning (7 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K) before finally giving up a solo HR to Shay Whitcomb. Cam Smith tied the game 2-2 in the eighth with a HR off Angels reliever Chase Silseth, eventually forcing extra innings. Ryan Zeferjahn struck out two in the top of the tenth, and having already used Josh Hader in the ninth, the Astros brought in Bryan Abreu for the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, he allowed a single to Donovan Walton, which advanced the automatic runner from second to third, and then a walk-off single to Jose Siri which drove him in.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Roger Bresnahan, so here is a quote from him:

"Boy, they sure called me lots of names when I tried on those shin guards. They must have been a good idea at that... [because] catchers still wear them."
