The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!
⚾ Welcome! ⚾
Yesterday we had a full slate of Friday games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
TOR 6, BAL 5 - The Blue Jays went with a bullpen day strategy, but Austin Voth struggled in the middle innings, giving up three HR to Jackson Holliday, Pete Alonso, and Samuel Basallo. BAL SP Trevor Rogers was doing well through six frames, but then in the seventh gave up 2-run HRs to both Kazuma Okamoto and Charles McAdoo. For McAdoo, he was making his MLB debut so this was his first career major league HR. The Blue Jays scored two more in the eighth off Orioles reliever Yennier Cano to take a 6-5 lead, and then Braydon Fisher eventually threw a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the year.
MIN 5, PIT 6 - Both teams did most of their scoring early, starting with the Twins' Kody Clemens who hit a solo HR in the top of the first. Coming back from injury and making his first major appearance since late 2024, PIT SP Jared Jones had 6 K in 4.1 IP, but also allowed 7 H, 2 BB, and 5 ER, including a 2-run HR by Trevor Larnach in the third. MIN SP Taj Bradley similarly had 6 K in 4 IP, but also gave up 5 H, 2 BB, and 4 ER, including a HR by Oneil Cruz, his 12th of the year. Both bullpens quieted things down for several innings, including Pittsburgh's Gregory Soto throwing a scoreless top of the ninth. Taylor Rogers came in for the bottom of the ninth with Minnesota ahead 5-4, but ended up allowing a walk-off 2-run HR to Bryan Reynolds.
MIA 7, NYM 9 (10) - MIA SP Max Meyer had been having a good season, but the Mets scored four against him in the first inning. He stayed in and went six innings (6 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K), giving up a solo HR to Mark Vientos in the third. NYM SP Freddy Peralta allowed a lot of baserunners (4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), and the Marlins later tied the game 7-7 in the eighth inning with a 2-run HR by Owen Cassie. The game went into extras, and Mets reliever Austin Warren pitched a scoreless top of the tenth. The Rays brought in Pete Fairbanks, but after getting Juan Soto to fly out, he allowed a 2-run walk-off HR to MJ Melendez.
DET 3, CWS 4 (10) - Dillon Dingler hit a 2-run HR in the third inning, and DET SP Troy Melton pitched another good game (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). But the White Sox scored in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game 2-2 and force extras. A sacrifice bunt advanced the Tigers automatic runner to third, and then a sacrifice fly drove him in. Drew Anderson came in for Detroit and got two outs, but then Miguel Vargas hit a 2-run, walk-off HR.
SFG 6, COL 8 - SFG SP Logan Webb did well in his first start back from the IL (4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), and the Giants were up 4-1 going into the bottom of the eighth. Ezequiel Tovar hit a 2-run HR to bring the Rockies within one, but then San Francisco scored two in the top of the ninth to go up 6-3. They brought in reliever Caleb Killian, but he gave up two singles and then a 3-run HR to Hunter Goodman which tied the game. The Giants stuck with him, and after a two-out single by Willi Castro, Tovar hit his second HR of the game, a walk-off two-run HR for the win.

Today’s Trivia Question
Paul Goldschmidt has had a great career, but he has also struck out quite often. He recently became only the ninth hitter to have 2,000+ strikeouts for his career. How many of the other eight can you name?

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Manny Ramirez, Amos Rusie, Zack Wheeler, Mike Donlin
In addition to Zack Wheeler, other currently active major leaguers born on May 30 include LAD Kyle Hurt, BOS Andruw Monasterio, and John Brebbia (free agent).
Today’s Matchups
We once again have a full slate of games today (15), with a mix of afternoon and evening contests. Here are a few matchups that look particularly interesting (and here is a link to the full schedule):
BOS Sonny Gray vs. CLE Parker Messick - Gray is generally doing well this year with a 3.27 ERA, but Messick has been even better at 2.24
CHC Ben Brown vs. STL Kyle Leahy - Brown started the year as a reliever, but the Cubs increased his innings and he is now working as a starter and owns a 2.01 ERA on the season
PHI Jesús Luzardo vs. LAD Roki Sasaki - Luzardo seems to have righted his ship lately, only allowing 2 ER in his last 18 IP over three starts, while Sasaki remains a bit inconsistent, but seems to have significantly improved his control lately
Other starting pitchers who are throwing today include DET Framber Valdez, SDP Michael King, KCR Seth Lugo, TOR Trey Yesavage, TBR Drew Rasmussen, and SEA Bryan Woo.
Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Amos Rusie. Here are some quotes from other old-timers about the hard-throwing pitcher:
"You can't hit 'em if you can't see 'em." - John McGraw
"Words fail to describe the speed with which Rusie sent the ball. … The giant simply drove the ball at you with the force of a cannon. It was like a white streak tearing past you." - Jimmy Ryan
"Rusie was the fastest without a doubt. Maybe that is because I had to hit against him. And they looked like peas as they sailed by me. All I saw of them was what I heard when they went into the catcher's mitt." - Connie Mack
"I'm not exaggerating when I say that Amos Rusie was the National League — the whole works. He was to baseball then what Babe Ruth was to baseball later. When anybody talked baseball, they just naturally talked about Amos Rusie." - Clark Griffith
⚾ Enjoy the games today!⚾
