⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday’s action once again featured a full slate of games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • CIN 7, PIT 17 - PIT SP Carmen Mlodzinski had 10 K in 5.2 IP, but also allowed 8 H, 1 BB, and 5 ER, including a HR by Will Benson. The Reds went on to score two more, and usually an 11-hit, 7-run performance would give you a chance for a win. But not when your pitchers give up five runs in each of the first, second, and fourth innings. Ultimately position player Jose Trevino gave up five hits and two runs in the eighth, but the real issue began with CIN SP Rhett Lowder (1.1 IP, 5 H, 8 ER, 4 BB, 1 K). He was pulled in the second inning after walking three consecutive batters, but then Connor Phillips walked the next four Bucs as well. The Pirates had 19 hits, 11 walks, and 17 runs on the day... but amazingly, no home runs. Konnor Griffin went 4-5 with a triple; Marcell Ozuna was 3-5 with 2 doubles, 3 runs, and 3 RBI; Brandon Lowe was 1-1 with 4 walks and 3 runs; and Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Ryan O'Hearn, Nick Gonzalez, and Spencer Horwitz had two hits apiece. Somehow, a day after he hit his first two HRs of the year, Bucs backstop Henry Davis went 0-6, lowering his average to .162 on the season.

  • NYM 3, LAA 4 (10) - LAA SP Reid Detmers had 8 K in 6.1 IP, but also allowed 9 H and 3 ER. On the other side, NYM SP Nolan McLean had a short start and also allowed three to score (4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). The game remained tied 3-3 through nine, and Ryan Zeferjahn pitched a scoreless second inning of relief in the top of the tenth. Along with the automatic runner, a Jorge Soler walk and a Jo Adell single loaded the bases against Mets reliever Austin Warren. He managed to get two outs, but then Oswald Peraza hit a walk-off single to once again doom the hapless Mets.

  • KCR 3, SEA 2 (10) - Both starters did well in this one, including KCR SP Seth Lugo (6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), but especially SEA SP Emerson Hancock who had 14 K in 7 IP (6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB). The game was tied 2-2 through nine, and the Mariners had already used closer Andrés Muñoz in the ninth so went with Cooper Criswell for the tenth. The automatic runner, Michael Massey, was aggressive and stole third base. With less than two outs, that means all you need is a sacrifice fly, and that is what Maikel Garcia provided to give the Royals the lead. Kansas City closer Lucas Erceg then struck out two and notched his ninth save of the year. The Royals won this game even though they struck out 17 times and didn't have any walks.

Today’s Trivia Question

One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Ryan Dempster. Over his career he had 132 wins, but also spent four years as a reliever and collected 87 saves. Since 1950, which six other pitchers have had both more wins and saves than Dempster? (Hint: Three are in the Hall of Fame.)

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Eppa Rixey. Here are two funny quotes from him:

On Warren Spahn breaking his left-hander win record (1959): "I'm very glad Spahn broke it. If he hadn't, no one would have known I'd set it."

"They put me in the Hall of Fame? They must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel!"

Enjoy the games today!
