⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday’s schedule included a full slate of games (15) as usual for a Sunday. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • CIN 3, CLE 10 - CLE SP Gavin Williams pitched fairly well (6 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K), giving up a solo HR to Elly De La Cruz in the third. Meanwhile, the Guardians scored runs off CIN SP Brady Singer in four different innings (4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), and blasted six HRs in total. Kyle Manzardo went 2-5 with 2 HR; Chase DeLauter was 2-5 with a HR; Brayan Rocchio went 2-3 with a HR; José Ramírez was 1-3 with 2 walks and a HR; and Angel Martínez hit a 2-run HR.

  • NYY 6, NYM 7 (10) - The Yankees scored first when Ben Rice hit a HR, his 15th of the season, off NYM SP Freddy Peralta (5 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 6 BB, 4 K). Rookie NYY SP Elmer Rodríguez did well in a short start (4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K), and the Yankees had a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately, the inconsistent David Bednar struggled again, giving up singles to Carson Benge and Bo Bichette, and then later a 3-run HR to Tyrone Taylor that tied the game 6-6 and forced extras. The Mets brought in Devin Williams to face his old teammates, and he held back the Yankees in the top of the tenth. New York turned to Tim Hill for the bottom of the frame, and rookie A.J. Ewing smartly bunted to move the automatic runner from second to third. Luis Torrens was then hit by a pitch, and Benge hit a chopper up the middle that the Yanks infield had no play on, allowing Marcus Semien to score for the win.

  • CHC 8, CWS 9 (10) - The Cubs scored three runs in the top of the first, including a 2-run HR by Michael Busch off CWS SP Erick Fedde (3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K). The White Sox scored four runs off CHC SP Colin Rea (4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and the game was tied 4-4 through the seventh. The South Siders scored three more in the bottom of the eighth on a HR by Tristan Peters, but then the Cubs did the same from a 3-run HR by Michael Conforto in the top of the ninth. Daniel Palencia pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to force extras. The Cubbies scored one in the top of the tenth, but the White Sox scored two from a walk-off HR by Edgar Quero, winning the Windy City series two games to one.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, so here are some good quotes from him (curated from the collection at The Baseball Almanac):

"I could field as long as I can remember, but hitting has been a struggle all my life."

"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job."

"I'm a guy who just wanted to see his name in the lineup everyday. To me, baseball was a passion to the point of obsession."

"It's a pretty sure thing that the player's bat is what speaks loudest when it's contract time, but there are moments when the glove has the last word."

"I wouldn't mind seeing someone erase my record of hitting into four triple plays."

"I'll play out the string and leave baseball without a tear. A man can't play games his whole life."

"Fifty years from now I'll be just three inches of type in a record book."

Enjoy the games today!
