⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday’s schedule included a full slate of games (15) as usual for a Wednesday. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • TBR 3, TOR 5 (10) - This game was a pitcher's duel with TOR SP Dylan Cease pitching seven strong innings (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K), and the Rays stretching out Griffin Jax for five shutout frames (5 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 1 K). The score ended up tied after nine innings, and Toronto brought in Jeff Hoffman for the tenth. Ben Williamson singled to drive in the automatic runner, and then with one out Yandy Díaz singled to drive in Williamson. Having used Jax as their starter and then employed five other relievers already, the Rays turned to Aaron Brooks, who they had just called up from the minors a few days earlier. He managed to get one out, but then walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto to load the bases. Daulton Varsho then hit a walk-off grand slam for the Blue Jays’ win.

  • WSH 8, CIN 7 (10) - The Reds scored five in the bottom of the first off WSH SP Jake Irvin (3 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 K), including a grand slam by Tyler Stephenson. But the Nats came right back with four in the top of the second off CIN SP Nick Lodolo (4 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K), and then tied the game in the third. The Reds immediately went up by one again in the bottom of the third, but then the Nats later tied it again and it remained knotted 6-6 through nine innings. In the tenth the Reds brought in Tony Santillan, but with one out he gave up a 2-run HR to Daylen Lile. The Reds got one back on a Spencer Steer double that drove in the automatic runner, but it wouldn't be enough.

  • DET 2, NYM 3 (10) - The Tigers scored two in the top of the first off NYM SP Christian Scott (4.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). DET SP Framber Valdez, who has been inconsistent so far this year, had one of his better games (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K). The game was tied 2-2 through nine, and Mets relievers pitched a scoreless tenth. With Kyle Finnegan and Kenley Jansen already having been used, the Tigers went with Drew Anderson for the bottom of the tenth. With rookie speedster A.J. Ewing on second base as the automatic runner, fellow rookie Carson Benge hit a one-out single to drive him in for the walk-off win. That was Benge's third single of the game, while Riley Greene went 3-5 for the Tigers in the loss.

  • SEA 3, HOU 4 (10) - SEA SP Bryce Miller did fairly well in his first start of the year (5.1 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), giving up a solo HR to Christian Walker in the sixth. The Mariners had two solo HRs of their own from J.P. Crawford and Luke Raley off HOU SP Lance McCullers Jr. (5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Each team scored once more and it was knotted 3-3 after nine. Bryan Abreu pitched a scoreless top of the tenth, and the Mariners turned to Alex Hoppe for the bottom of the frame. He threw a wild pitch, allowing Brice Matthews, the automatic runner, to advance to third. Zach Cole then hit a walk-off single for the win.

For bonus points, can you name any of the other three players who came in behind Pérez on the 1970s RBI leaderboard, but each still had over 900 RBI?

Today’s Matchups

Today we have a partial slate of games (11), as some teams are traveling or otherwise have a day off. Here are a few matchups of interest (see full list at MLB):

  • WSH Foster Griffin vs. CIN Chase Burns - both starters have begun the season well, with Griffin posting a 2.12 ERA over 8 starts, and Burns having a 2.11 ERA over his 8 starts

  • PHI Jesús Luzardo vs. BOS Ranger Suárez - this series is even 1-1, with Suárez facing off against his old team

  • CHC Ben Brown vs. ATL Chris Sale - can the Cubs avoid a sweep? Won’t be easy going up against Chris Sale. Also, last time out Ben Brown was stretched out to 4 IP, but otherwise has been a reliever this year (with a 1.82 ERA on the year).

Other hurlers on the hill today include NYM Nolan McLean, MIL Kyle Harrison, STL Michael McGreevy, and KCR Kris Bubic.

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Tony Pérez, so here are two interesting quotes from him:

"It doesn't get any better than that for a Latin player... That home run. ... Clemente and Cepeda congratulating me. That's the moment I felt I arrived." (On his 1967 All-Star Game winning home run)

"You see him play and you have to play the way he plays... When you didn't run the ball out or run the base like you're supposed to do, you're going to look bad, because Pete [Rose], he was a machine. He never stopped, and he was gone. You have to play hard like he did."

Enjoy the games today!
