Issue #637
The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart-brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!
⚾ Welcome! ⚾
Yesterday’s schedule included a short slate of only six games. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
NYY 2, BAL 3 - BAL SP Brandon Young did fairly well (5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), giving up a 2-run HR to Ben Rice in the third. Meanwhile, NYY SP Ryan Weathers had a no-hitter through six innings (6.1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K). He left in the seventh with two runners on base, but reliever Brent Headrick immediately gave up a 3-run HR to Coby Mayo that gave Baltimore a one-run lead. Orioles reliever Rico Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth, and then Anthony Nunez did the same in the ninth to earn his second save.
SFG 9, LAD 3 - Rafael Devers gave the Giants an early lead with a solo HR in the second inning. Max Muncy later hit a HR for the Dodgers to tie the game at 3-3 through six innings. But then the Giants scored three runs in both the seventh and ninth innings to pull away, with five of their hitters collecting two hits apiece, including Devers, Luis Arraez, Casey Schmitt, Heliot Ramos, and Willy Adames. Of note, Mookie Betts played SS and batted second, going 1-5 with a single in his first game back from the IL.
ARI 1, TEX 0
LAA 2, CLE 7
TBR 8, TOR 5

Today’s Trivia Question
One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Hall of Famer Yogi Berra. He has the record for the most World Series games played with 75. Many of his Yankees teammates are high on that list as well, such as Mickey Mantle in second place with 65. Which player has played in the most World Series games… among those who never played for the Yankees? (Hints: He is a Hall of Famer, and played for the Giants and Cardinals.)
(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Yogi Berra. He is of course the most often-quoted baseball player of all-time, as he was full of wit and wisdom, much of which had an odd aspect to it in one way or another. I've shared some of his quotes in this newsletter before, and no doubt will many more times in the future. But today I'll instead share some quotes by others about the great Yogi, curated from the collection at The Baseball Almanac:
"He'd fall in a sewer and come up with a gold watch." - Casey Stengel
"He seemed to be doing everything wrong, yet everything came out right. He stopped everything behind the plate and hit everything in front of it." - Mel Ott
"They say he's funny. Well, he has a lovely wife and family, a beautiful home, money in the bank, and he plays golf with millionaires. What's funny about that?" - Casey Stengel
"Why has our pitching been so great? Our catcher that's why. He looks cumbersome but he's quick as a cat." - Casey Stengel
"Yogi (Berra) had the fastest bat I ever saw. He could hit a ball late, that was already past him, and take it out of the park. The pitchers were afraid of him because he'd hit anything, so they didn't know what to throw. Yogi had them psyched out and he wasn't even trying to psych them out." - Hector Lopez
"Yogi (Berra), you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?" - Carmen Berra (Yogi's wife) "Surprise me." - Yogi Berra
