⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Yesterday’s action featured a full slate of games (15). Here are the results (link to all game box scores):

  • TBR 1, CLE 0 - Both starters did well: TBR SP Nick Martinez (7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and CLE SP Tanner Bibee (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K). The lone run of the game came in the top of the fifth when Jonathan Aranda singled with runners on first and third. Cole Sulser eventually pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to notch his first save of the season. Of note, the 2024 #1 overall draft pick, 2B Travis Bazzana, made his MLB debut for Cleveland, going 0-2 with two walks and one strikeout.

  • NYY 3, TEX 2 - Both starters did well in this one: NYY SP Cam Schlittler (6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) and TEX SP Jacob deGrom (6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). The Yankees scored one run in the first inning, Austin Wells hit a solo HR in the seventh, and then Aaron Judge hit his 12th HR of the year in the ninth to put the Yankees up 3-0. They brought in closer David Bednar, and he made things interesting as he sometimes does. Josh Smith flew out, but then Andrew McCutchen reached first on a throwing error by Ryan McMahon. Danny Jansen drove him home with a triple, and then Bednar hit Brandon Nimmo. Josh Jung hit a single which drove in Jansen, but then Bednar induced Corey Seager to ground into a double play to end the game.

  • BOS 0, TOR 3 - TOR SP Trey Yesavage pitched well in his 2026 debut (5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), and four Blue Jays relievers combined for the shutout, with Louis Varland striking out three in the ninth for his fourth save. BOS SP Peyton Tolle allowed a few runs in his second start of the year (4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K), with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. going 2-3 with a double.

The Phillies dismiss Thomson, turn to Mattingly

News yesterday included the Phillies making a change after a really disappointing start to the season. They have dismissed manager Rob Thomson and are elevating bench coach Don Mattingly as interim manager. Mattingly is of course the former star player with the Yankees, but also former manager of the Dodgers from 2011-2015 and the Marlins from 2016-2022. You can learn more about this change in the article by Todd Zolecki at MLB, which includes a video interview of Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Today’s Trivia Question

One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Luis Aparicio. He led the AL with 56 SB in 1959, which tied Wally Moses' 56 SB (1943) as the top single-season mark for the White Sox. Can you name any of the three White Sox players since then who have had more than 56 SB in a season? (Hint: the seasons were 1983, 2005, and 2010)

(Trivia answers are provided for paid All-Star subscribers of the Baseball Buffet.)

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Currently active players who were born on April 29 include DET Zach McKinstry, CHC Scott Kingery, PIT Joe Le Sorsa, Luis Contreras (free agent).

Today’s Matchups

Today we have another full slate of games (15), with the following being some of the more interesting matchups (see also full list):

  • TBR Drew Rasmussen vs. CLE Gavin Williams - both starters have been good so far this year, though Williams struggled some in his last start

  • SEA George Kirby vs. MIN Taj Bradley - similarly, both starters have done well so far this year, though Bradley was roughed up a bit in his last start

  • NYY Elmer Rodríguez vs. TEX Nathan Eovaldi - 22-year-old Rodríguez is making his major league debut, after posting a 2.58 ERA over 26 starts in the minors last year, and a 1.27 ERA in 4 starts at AAA this year

  • MIA Sandy Alcantara vs. LAD Tyler Glasnow - two good starters in this matchup

  • SFG Logan Webb vs. PHI Cristopher Sánchez - two generally strong pitchers here, though Webb has had mixed results this year and Sánchez was hit hard in his last outing

  • DET Tarik Skubal vs. ATL JR Ritchie - the rookie Ritchie draws a tough opponent for his second major league start

Baseball Quote of the Day

One of today's Birthday Boys is Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio, so here are a few quotes about him:

  • "What is the top requirement for a second baseman? A fine shortstop. I am fortunate in having the greatest shortstop in baseball, Luis Aparicio." - Nellie Fox

  • "That little guy is just about the greatest shortstop I've ever seen. I can't imagine how anybody could possibly be any better, no matter how far back you go." - Ralph Houk

  • "He's the best I've ever seen. He makes plays which I know can't possibly be made, yet he makes them almost every day." - Bill Veeck
