Issue #618
The goal with The Baseball Buffet series is to provide the best daily dose of relevant baseball info in a smart-brevity format (mostly short bullets, getting to the point, with quick analysis/insights.) Think of it like what baseball fans of a certain age would look forward to in their morning newspaper’s sports section each day!
⚾ Welcome! Today is Free Friday! ⚾
NOTE: The Baseball Buffet recently moved to a tiered model, with free subscribers receiving a shortened daily edition, and paid All-Star subscribers receiving the full buffet each day. The exception is Free Fridays, when everyone gets the full issue!
Yesterday had a partial slate of 9 games, as some teams were traveling or otherwise had a day off. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
ATL 7, WSH 2 - James Wood led off the bottom of the first and welcomed rookie ATL SP JR Ritchie to the majors by hitting his 10th HR of the year. CJ Abrams tagged him for a solo HR in the fourth, but otherwise JR Ritchie did well (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) and two Braves relievers pitched scoreless innings. Ozzie Albies went 3-4 with a HR, 2 runs, and 4 RBI; Matt Olson was 3-5 with a double and 2 runs; and Michael Harris II went 3-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
PHI 7, CHC 8 (10) - The Cubs jumped out to an early lead, as PHI SP Cristopher Sánchez struggled in this one (5.1 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). The Phillies came back led by Brandon Marsh, who had 2 HRs off CHC SP Edward Cabrera (7 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). With the Phillies down 7-6, Adolis García hit a pinch-hit HR in the top of the ninth to tie the game and eventually force extras. The Cubs brought in Javier Assad (who has started three games this year) and he kept the Phillies from scoring in the top of the tenth. Tanner Banks couldn't do the same, as the Cubs loaded the bases and then with one out Dansby Swanson singled to drive in Ian Happ for the win. The result extends Chicago's winning streak to nine, and Philadelphia's losing streak to nine.
SDP 10, COL 8 - Lots of offense in this game, with 27 hits and scoring spread throughout. The Rockies had an early 5-2 lead after two innings, then still had an 8-5 lead after eight. But the Padres came back with five runs in the top of the ninth, including a 3-run HR by Gavin Sheets. And then you know what happened next: Mason Miller came in, doesn't allow any runs, and gets his ninth save. Offensive standouts for Colorado were Mickey Moniak who went 4-5 with 2 HR; Troy Johnston went 3-4 with a walk and 2 RBI; and TJ Rumfield who was 2-4 with a walk, 2 doubles, and 2 RBI. For the Padres, Xander Bogaerts went 2-3 with 2 walks, a HR, and 2 runs; Ramón Laureano was 3-6 with a triple and 2 RBI; and Miguel Andujar went 2-5 with a double and 3 RBI.
MIL 4, DET 5 - Riley Greene hit a 2-run HR in the bottom of the first off MIL SP Brandon Sproat (5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). DET SP Tarik Skubal was going well until running into some trouble in the seventh (6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K), but three Tigers relievers kept the Brewers from scoring any further. Jahmai Jones hit a HR in the eighth that tied the game, and then Spencer Torkelson hit a walk-off HR in the ninth.
CWS 4, ARI 1 - Both starters did well: CWS SP Davis Martin (6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) and Michael Soroka (5 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). This game remained tied 1-1 through eight innings, but then Andrew Benintendi hit a 3-run HR in the top of the ninth off D-Backs reliever Paul Sewald. For the White Sox, Seranthony Domínguez struck out two while securing his fifth save.
LAD 3, SFG 0 - SFG SP Logan Webb didn't pitch badly (7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), but the three runs he allowed were all it would take. LAD SP Tyler Glasnow was outstanding (8 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) and Tanner Scott combined with him for a one-hit shutout.
NYY 4, BOS 2 - Payton Tolle was outstanding in his first 2026 major league game, striking out 11 in 6 innings (3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB), only giving up a solo HR to Jazz Chisholm in the fifth. Meanwhile, Massachusetts native NYY SP Cam Schlittler did well in his first Fenway start (8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), allowing a HR to Carlos Narváez in the fifth. Down 2-1, the Yankees scored three in the top of the seventh, and then eventually David Bednar pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his seventh save.
MIN 8, NYM 10 - The Mets scored six in the first two innings off MIN SP Joe Ryan (5 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), including Brett Baty hitting a 3-run HR, his first of the year. Meanwhile, Christian Scott had control issues, allowing five walks in less than two innings of work. Tobias Myers and David Peterson provided nearly six innings of work to fill the gap. But then Craig Kimbrel loaded the bases in the eighth and Huascar Brazobán allowed a grand slam to Ryan Jeffers as the Twins tied the game 7-7. The Mets came right back with three in the bottom of the eighth from a bases-loaded double by Bo Bichette. New York reliever Devin Williams again struggled in ninth, but eventually struck out Trevor Larnach to close out the game.
PIT 1, TEX 6 - TEX SP Jacob deGrom was outstanding with 10 K in 5.2 IP (5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB), only allowing a HR to Oneil Cruz in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, PIT SP Bubba Chandler allowed a lot of baserunners (4 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), plus a 2-run HR by Evan Carter and a 3-run HR to Corey Seager. Three Pirates relievers threw four shutout innings after that, but the damage was done as four Rangers relievers also kept the Bucs from scoring.

Today’s Trivia Question
One of today's Birthday Boys (see below) is Hall of Famer Chipper Jones. He ranks third on the Braves all-time HR leaderboard. Can you name the two players ahead of him, and the two who rank fourth and fifth?
Trivia answer is at the bottom of each full issue of The Baseball Buffet.
On this day in baseball history…
Here is what stands out to me for this day in baseball history. All quoted descriptions are from baseball-reference.com.
📅 On April 24…
1901: The birth of the American League. "Three rain postponements give Chicago the honor of hosting the first major league game in American League history (the circuit played as a minor league in 1900). At South Side Park, a crowd of over 10,000 fans attends the game to see pitcher Roy Patterson take the win for the Chicago White Sox over the visiting Cleveland Blues, 8 - 2. Clark Griffith manages Chicago."
1917: George Mogridge of the Yankees throws a no-hitter. "George Mogridge of the New York Yankees pitches a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox, 2 - 1, at Fenway Park. Mogridge strikes out three batters and walks three as he becomes the first Yankee pitcher to actually win a no-hit game: in 1910, Tom Hughes had pitched nine no-hit innings against Cleveland, but lost the game after giving up a hit in the 10th and five runs in the 11th."
1945: Happy Chandler becomes commissioner. "Happy Chandler becomes the second baseball commissioner. The major league owners unanimously elect the former governor of Kentucky on the first ballot and reward him with a seven-year contract. Chandler succeeds Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the game's first commissioner, who died in 1944."
1946: Eleven players become Hall of Famers. "Former major leaguers Jesse Burkett, Frank Chance, Jack Chesbro, Johnny Evers, Clark Griffith, Tommy McCarthy, Joe McGinnity, Eddie Plank, Joe Tinker, Rube Waddell and Ed Walsh are inducted into the Hall of Fame. This comes as a result of the BBWAA having once again failed to elect anyone: clearly overstepping its mandate, the Old Timers Committee walks into the breach and elects a boatload of players, many of which are under active consideration by the baseball writers."
1947: Johnny Mize hits 3 HR in a game... for the fifth time. "Johnny Mize of the New York Giants becomes the first major leaguer to hit three home runs in a game on five different occasions. Mize hits his trio off Johnny Sain of the Boston Braves, but in spite of his barrage, the Giants lose to the Braves, 14 - 5."
1956: Get that umpire a pair of glasses! "American League umpire Frank Umont is the first to wear glasses in a regular-season game when he officiates a contest between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Athletics. A former NFL tackle for the New York Giants, Umont still presents an intimidating appearance to most players and fans."
1957: Nine walks by one team in one inning. "The Chicago Cubs set a National League record by walking nine batters in the 5th inning of a 9 - 5 loss to the Cincinnati Redlegs. Moe Drabowsky walks four batters, Jackie Collum issues three free passes, and Jim Brosnan two during the wild inning."
1962: Sandy strikes out 18. "Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers strikes out 18 Chicago Cubs in a 10 - 2 victory at Wrigley Field. Koufax ties the record of 18 strikeouts in a single game, matching the mark set by Bob Feller with the Cleveland Indians."
1996: The Twins crush the Tigers. "Greg Myers and Paul Molitor each have five RBI as the Minnesota Twins set a team record for runs and rout the Detroit Tigers, 24 - 11. It is the highest run total against the Tigers in 84 years, matching the mark set in a 24 - 2 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics on May 18, 1912, in a game in which Detroit used replacement players due to a players' strike."

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Chipper Jones, so here are a few quotes from him:
"I think baseball has such a way of humbling you. You can go 20-for-20, and before you know it, you're going to go through an 0-for-30. It has that way of knocking you back down to earth."
"Momentum can turn on one bad pitch, one bad hop, one bad play."
"I think any athlete will tell you that season-ending losses stay with you for a long time. If you are one of the main reasons for a season-ending loss, it sticks with you longer."
"It was easy for me to be humble because I played with so many other great players and they had no problem knocking me down a peg or getting my head out of the clouds."
"The guys who feel unfulfilled by the previous season, they go home in the offseason and they work harder to get better and better, and they come back with a vengeance."
"You know, win with class, lose with class. Just keep your mouth shut and go play your game."
"While I am flattered about the speculation of being enticed out of retirement, I'm happy with life as a bad golfer!"
⚾ Enjoy the games today! ⚾
