Yesterday featured a full slate of 15 games. Here are the results (link to all game box scores):
ARI 3, PHI 4 - Ketel Marte led off the game with a HR, but then PHI SP Taijuan Walker did better after the first inning (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). The Phillies scored four in the third inning off ARI SP Brandon Pfaadt (6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K), as Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper hit back-to-back HR. Rookie CF Justin Crawford went 2-2 with a walk and a double out of the nine-hole, raising his average to .350 this season.
COL 5, SDP 9 - Mickey Moniak went 3-4 with homers in the first and third innings. Edouard Julien also had a HR in the third inning, giving the Rockies an early 4-0 lead against SDP SP Germán Márquez (5 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). But the Padres came right back with three runs in the third and another three in the fourth against COL SP Ryan Feltner (4 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). They scored another three insurance runs in the sixth, with Ramón Laureano going 2-3 with 2 walks, a HR, a double, 3 runs, and 3 RBI, and Manny Machado hitting a 2-run HR. Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-4 with a walk and a double, and interestingly played at 2B, as Jake Cronenworth shifted over to SS to give Xander Bogaerts a day off.
TEX 3, LAD 6 - Brandon Nimmo led off the game with a HR, and then hit another in the sixth, going 3-4 with a double as well. LAD SP Emmet Sheehan didn't have trouble with anyone else (6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), and four Dodgers relievers kept the Rangers off the board the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani also led things off with a HR in the bottom of the first, extending his on-base streak to 45 games. Teoscar Hernández went 2-4 with a HR, a double, 2 runs, and 3 RBI, and Will Smith went 2-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs.
HOU 7, SEA 8 - Cal Raleigh got things going with a 2-run HR in the first inning against HOU SP Lance McCullers Jr. (4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). The Astros came right back with seven runs in the next three innings off SEA SP Luis Castillo (3.1 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). The Astros impressively outhit the Mariners 17-7, with Yordan Alvarez going 3-6 with a HR and a double; Carlos Correa 3-5 with a double and 2 runs; and Cam Smith 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. But Julio Rodríguez hit a HR in the fifth inning to tie the game 7-7, and it stayed that way through eight. Andrés Muñoz allowed some baserunners, but kept the Astros from scoring in the top of the ninth. Bryan Abreu came in for the bottom of the frame and had some control issues, loading the bases for J.P. Crawford, who hit a walk-off single to drive in Cole Young for the win.

Today’s Trivia Question
The Dodgers are a league-best 11-3, so not surprisingly they are also leading the majors in runs per game with 6.36. Can you guess which team is second in runs per game so far this year at 6.13? Bonus points if you can name any of the next three teams who are all averaging 5+ runs per game.

🎂 Today’s Birthday Boys 🎉

Addie Joss, Vic Willis, Johnny Antonelli, Paul Lo Duca
Currently active players who were born on April 12 include SEA Gabe Speier, BAL Cade Povich, PIT Dennis Santana, and DET Tomás Nido.
Today’s Matchups
Today is a typical Sunday with a full slate of games (15), including the following interesting matchups (see also full list):
ARI Zac Gallen vs. PHI Andrew Painter - the 23-year-old rookie Painter has so far had one good start, and one not so good
TBR Taj Bradley vs. TOR Max Scherzer - Bradley is off to a great start this year (1.08 ERA in 3 starts), and Scherzer is always worth watching
MIA Sandy Alcantara vs. DET Tarik Skubal - this looks to be a good pitcher's duel, especially as Alcantara seems to have returned to his earlier excellence
TEX Jacob deGrom vs. LAD Roki Sasaki - The Dodgers will have a challenge up against deGrom, but the same can be said for the veteran hurler up against the tough Dodgers lineup. And who knows what we'll see from Sasaki in each of his starts!
Also on the hill today are NYM Freddy Peralta, NYY Cam Schlittler, KCR Noah Cameron, MIL Brandon Woodruff, PIT Bubba Chandler, SEA Logan Gilbert, ATL Chris Sale
Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today's Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Vic Willis, so here is an interesting quote from him:
“Don't believe those tales you hear about my being all-in. Wait until you see me in action for your team and then form your opinion of my worth to your team. I assure you that I am delighted to be a Pirate and that I will do my best to bring another pennant to the Smoky City.”
