⚾ Welcome! ⚾

Unlike many Mondays during the season, yesterday was a loaded, full slate of 15 games. Let’s dive in! (Link to all game box scores)

  • MIN 1, KCR 3 - Matt Wallner hit a HR in the second inning, but otherwise KCR SP Kris Bubic did well (6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), and three Royals’ relievers threw scoreless innings with John Schreiber earning the save. Their three runs came from a 2-run HR by Kyle Isbel, and a solo HR by Isaac Collins.

  • TEX 5, BAL 2 - Gunnar Henderson hit a HR in the bottom of the first, but the Orioles couldn’t get much else going in this one. TEX SP Jack Leiter did well (6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K), and three Rangers’ relievers threw scoreless innings with Tyler Alexander earning his second save of the year. Brandon Nimmo went 2-5 with 2 runs, and Jake Burger went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

  • PIT 0, CIN 2 - CIN SP Chase Burns was outstanding (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) and three Reds’ relievers combined for a four-hit shutout with Connor Phillips earning the save. The Reds also only had four hits, but PIT SP Braxton Ashcraft allowed two runs in the fourth (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K), one from a sacrifice fly and one from a triple by Will Benson.

  • WSH 13, PHI 2 - Rafael Marchán hit a 2-run HR in the fifth inning, but otherwise WSH SP Foster Griffin pitched well (5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). The Nationals offense was the big story here though, as they collected 17 hits, with 14 singles and 3 doubles. José Tena had three hits, while six others had two hits apiece: Luis García Jr., Brady House, Daylen Lile, CJ Abrams, Jorbit Vivas, and Joey Wiemer.

  • CWS 9, MIA 4 - MIA SP Chris Paddack had 6 K in 4 IP, but also allowed 8 hits and 8 ER, including a 3-run HR by Austin Hays, and a grand slam by Miguel Vargas, who was 2-4 with 2 runs and 6 RBI on the day. Liam Hicks had a 2-run HR for Miami, but CWS SP Davis Martin otherwise pitched fairly well (5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) and Jordan Hicks earned his first save of the year.

  • COL 14, TOR 5 - TOR SP Cody Ponce was doing well (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) when he suffered a knee injury on an infield grounder and was taken out of the game on a cart. George Springer hit a HR, but COL SP Tomoyuki Sugano otherwise did well (4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). The Rockies were up 2-1 through five, but then scored seven runs in the sixth and scored five more runs late when the Blue Jays used catcher Tyler Heineman on the mound. They had 17 hits in all, with Troy Johnston and Braxton Fulford each hitting a HR, and Ezequiel Tovar and TJ Rumfield both having three hits. Toronto did manage to score four runs late in the game off homers by Andrés Giménez, Davis Schneider, and Kazuma Okamoto, all hit off Chase Dollander (4 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K).

  • ATH 0, ATL 4 - ATL SP Bryce Elder pitched well (6 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) and three Braves relievers combined for the shutout. Meanwhile, ATH SP Jacob Lopez allowed many baserunners (4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 0 K), with Ronald Acuña Jr. going 2-2 with 2 BB, and Mauricio Dubón was 3-4 with 3 RBI. The loss gives the Athletics an 0-4 record so far this year.

  • LAA 2, CHC 7 - LAA SP Ryan Johnson struggled (3.1 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K), giving up three runs in both the first and third innings, including a HR hit by Ian Happ. CHC SP Edward Cabrera pitched very well (6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), and then Colin Rea gave up a 2-run HR to Yoan Moncada in the seventh but pitched three innings to finish the game (3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K).

  • TBR 3, MIL 2 - After his five-hit game the day before, Yandy Díaz led off this one with a homer. MIL SP Kyle Harrison settled in after that (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K), and William Contreras put the Brewers up with a 2-run HR in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Martinez had done well before that dinger (6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), and four Rays’ relievers then kept Milwaukee off the board. Johnny DeLuca hit a HR in the seventh which tied the game, and then in the top of the ninth Nick Fortes hit a double that drove in DeLuca for what would be the winning run.

  • NYM 4, STL 2 - NYM SP Clay Holmes pitched well (5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), giving up a HR to Nolan Gorman in the sixth. Three Mets relievers kept the Cardinals off the board after that, with Devin Williams earning his first save for the Mets.

  • BOS 1, HOU 8 - HOU SP Lance McCullers Jr. had a great game (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) and Ryan Weiss struck out three in two innings to close it out. The Red Sox paired two starters but both struggled: Ranger Suarez (4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) and Johan Oviedo (3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Jose Altuve went 4-4 with a walk, 2 HR, 4 runs, and 2 RBI, and both Yordan Alvarez and Brice Matthews had homers also.

  • SFG 3, SDP 2 - SFG SP Landen Roupp did very well (6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), and the Giants scored three off SDP SP Walker Buehler (4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), including a solo HR by Harrison Bader. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Jackson Merrill hit a 2-run HR but it wouldn’t be enough as Ryan Walker closed it out to earn his first save of the year.

  • NYY 1, SEA 2 - Both starting pitchers did well in this one: NYY SP Ryan Weathers (4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) and SEA SP Luis Castillo (6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K). The game was tied 1-1 through eight, and Matt Brash kept the Yankees off the board in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the frame Paul Blackburn allowed a series of singles to Leo Rivas, Brendan Donovan, and ultimately Cal Raleigh who had the walk-off RBI.

  • CLE 4, LAD 2 - LAD SP Roki Sasaki did pretty well in a short start (4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), but then Justin Wrobleski gave up three runs in the seventh to give the Guardians a 4-0 lead. CLE SP Parker Messick was up to the task against the tough Dodgers lineup (6 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K), with Los Angeles only scoring two runs in the ninth off Cade Smith. Steven Kwan was 3-5 with a double and a SB, and Austin Hedges and Angel Martínez had two hits apiece.

  • DET 6, ARI 9 - DET SP Justin Verlander was throwing hard but gave up a 3-run HR to Corbin Carroll, and allowed five runs in the first two innings. The Diamondbacks scored three more in the fifth to go up 8-0, as ARI SP Michael Soroka was outstanding (5 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K). The Tigers clawed their way back with six runs in the top of the seventh, and then Ildemaro Vargas hit a solo HR in the bottom of the frame. Taylor Clarke and Paul Sewald kept Detroit from scoring in the final two innings, with the latter earning his first save of the year.

Today’s Trivia Question

There are only three active players with 300+ SB, though a fourth seems likely to join them this year as he has 289 SB. Can you name these four players?

Trivia answers are always provided towards the bottom of each issue of The Baseball Buffet.

On this day in baseball history…

Here is what stands out to me for this day in baseball history. All quoted descriptions are from baseball-reference.com.

📅 On March 31…

  • 1982: The Rangers acquire Larry Parrish. "The Texas Rangers trade 1B/OF Al Oliver to the Montreal Expos in exchange for 3B Larry Parrish and minor league 1B Dave Hostetler."

  • 1995: The long strike ends. "The longest strike action in sports history ends - in a courtroom. U.S. District Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor grants an injunction forbidding owners from implementing new financial working conditions unilaterally in the wake of the impasse in negotiations. The court decides that conditions will revert to the old rules from the previous season. The owner will cave in and reach an agreement on that basis with the Players Association tomorrow. Because of the timing of the court order, 18 games will have to be trimmed from the major league schedule."

  • 2019: Turning a page. "19-year-old Elvis Luciano becomes the first player born in the 21st century to appear in a major league game when he makes his debut for the Blue Jays against the Tigers. Never having pitched above Rookie-class before this season, he allows just one hit in 1 1/3 inning in a successful outing. This coincides with the last two players who were active in the previous century, Adrian Beltre and Bartolo Colon, both being out of the majors as a page has clearly turned."
