⚾ Welcome! ⚾
The World Baseball Classic tournament was back with some action yesterday, with two quarterfinal games:
United States 5, Canada 3 - SFG SP Logan Webb did well with 4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, and 5 K, and the USA scored early with three runs in the first three innings against AZ SP Michael Soroka (2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). They added two more in the top of the sixth to go up 5-0, but then Canada came back with three in the bottom of the inning, including a 2-run HR by CLE C Bo Naylor. The score remained 5-3 the rest of the way, as USA’s bullpen shutout Canada in the final three innings with NYY RP David Bednar, BOS RP Garrett Whitlock, and SDP RP Mason Miller each pitching an inning, and Miller striking out three to earn the save.
Korea 0, Dominican Republic 10 - This one was called after seven innings. PHI SP Cristopher Sánchez was great with 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, and 8 K, while TOR 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 1-2 with a walk, a double, and 2 runs, TBR DH Junior Caminero was 2-2 with a double and 2 runs, and NYY C Austin Wells hit a 3-run HR.
Today’s quarterfinal WBC matchups are:
3:00pm ET: Puerto Rico (KCR SP Seth Lugo) vs. Italy (LAA SP Sam Aldegheri)
9:00pm ET Venezuela (BOS SP Ranger Suárez) vs. Japan (LAD SP Yoshinobu Yamamoto)

Rangers sign lefty reliever Jalen Beeks
For the second day in a row, an AL team has signed a left-handed relief pitcher. According to an article by Kennedi Landry at MLB, the Rangers are signing Jalen Beeks to a 1-year deal (terms not yet disclosed).
The 32-year-old Beeks has pitched in the majors for 7 seasons. He was drafted by the Red Sox, then spent five years with the Rays, was with the Rockies and Pirates in 2024, and the Diamondbacks in 2025. Last year he had a 3.77 ERA with 47 K in 57.1 IP over 61 appearances. To make room for Beeks, the Rangers designated for assignment another reliever, Alexis Díaz, whom Texas signed in December, but who has struggled so far during Spring Training.

On this day in baseball history…
Here is what stands out to me for this day in baseball history. All quoted descriptions are from baseball-reference.com.
📅 On March 14…
1932: The Reds trade for catcher Ernie Lombardi. “The Cincinnati Reds acquire catcher Ernie Lombardi, outfielder Babe Herman, and infielder Wally Gilbert from the Brooklyn Dodgers for catcher Clyde Sukeforth and infielders Tony Cuccinello and Joe Stripp. Herman will bat .324 in one season in Cincinnati following the trade (he will later return to the club for two seasons), but Lombardi makes the trade a steal. Lombardi will bat .311 in ten seasons in Cincinnati, winning a batting title and MVP Award in 1938.”
1954: A young Hank Aaron impresses Ted Williams. “Hank Aaron makes his first spring training start for the Milwaukee Braves in an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox. Aaron, taking advantage of an injury suffered by starting outfielder Bobby Thomson, raps out three hits, including a home run. The noise of the contact is so loud that Ted Williams runs out of the Boston clubhouse to see who can make that sound with a bat. Aaron will eventually start for the Braves on Opening Day and will go on to hit a respectable .280 with 13 home runs and 58 RBI in his rookie season.”

Baseball Quote of the Day
One of today’s Birthday Boys (see above) is Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, so here are some quotes from him:
"I was told I would never make it because I'm too short. Well, I'm still too short, but I've got 10 All-Star games, two World Series championships, and I'm a very happy and contented guy. It doesn't matter what your height is, it's what's in your heart."
"You can be what you want to be, if you believe in yourself and work hard, because anything, and I'm telling you anything, is possible."
"I never think about the accolades. I just want to play the game and have fun."
"Don't take anything for granted, because tomorrow is not promised to any of us."
