Best Visiting Hitters at Each Ballpark

Who hits the best at each of MLB's 30 ballparks, leaving aside the home team's players?

Issue #71

This is the latest article in my pre-season series that looks for players with extreme recent results of one sort or another. Such data might be interesting to consider as we enter the 2023 season—especially for anyone who might play MLB’s Beat the Streak game, compete in Daily Fantasy games, or make various kinds of proposition bets (e.g., a certain player to hit a homerun today).

Here I’ve analyzed each of the 30 major league ballparks and looked for visiting players who hit the best at each. Is it mostly a matter of luck, so perhaps not likely to be repeated in the future? Or are some of these guys more comfortable at certain road ballparks than others? Or perhaps at times the dimensions of some stadiums play to their particular strengths as hitters?

For this analysis I looked mostly at stats from 2021 and 2022. My focus was on extra-base hits, slash lines, and especially homeruns. I was most interested in players who have played 10 or more games at a particular park, as the more games played the less likely the results are due to chance (e.g., facing just one or two awful starters). That said, in the results below I did also list some numbers for other players who only played 5-9 recent games at the particular ballpark, but in such cases the player generally had to have hit 3+ HR or have a batting average over .400 to have caught my attention. Lastly, I checked career numbers for the veterans’ on these lists, to see if they’ve actually had sustained success at that particular stadium.

I’m listing these results in descending order by Park Factor according to Statcast data as analyzed over at Baseball Savant. You can read at the top of that page a little more about that, and check out their heat-map of different aspects of offense that relatively strong or weak at each. I will below indicate the overall Park Factor (PF) score for each stadium (100 is league average), and I’ll call out with a note the few cases where a stadium overall rates as high-offense, even though its latest HR rating is below average. And each player’s current team is indicated in parentheses—note that is necessarily where they played in 2021 or 2022 of course.

OK, so with all that defined, here we go…

Colorado - Coors Field (PF = 112)

Coors isn’t the crazy offensive park it was a couple decades ago, but it still has the highest overall PF ratings, and clearly some Giants hitters still like going there:

  • Thairo Estrada (SFG) - 12 games, 3 HR, 4 D, .415/.467/.732

  • Brandon Crawford (SFG) - 18 games, 6 HR, T, 3 D, .364/.468/.712

  • Jake Cronenworth (SDP) - 19 games, 4 HR, T, 6 D, .368/.451/.662

  • Will Smith (LAD) - 16 games, 4 HR, 5 D, .352/.431/.667

  • Mike Yastrzemski (SFG) - 14 games, 5 HR, 4 D, .308/.383/.673

Also of note:

  • Adam Duvall (BOS) - 8 games, 9-28, 3 HR, 2 T, 3 D

  • Wil Myers (CIN) - 9 games, 8-25, 3 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • From 2019-2022 Yastrzemski has a slash line of .330/.402/.718 with 10 HR in 117 PA at Coors.

  • Myers has done well at Coors over his entire career, with a .353/.402/.667 slash and 14 HR and 17 doubles in 229 PA (55 games).

  • Not listed above, Starling Marte also has liked Coors: .421/.468/.588 with 5 HR in 124 PA (26 games).

Cincinnati - Great American Ball Park (PF = 111)

The Reds are in trouble when Cardinals’ Goldschmidt and Arenado come to town. At least Wong won’t be visiting as often now that he has switched leagues:

  • Paul Goldschmidt (STL) - 18 games, 8 HR, 5 D, .361/.432/.764

  • Kolten Wong (SEA) - 11 games, 3 HR, T, 2 D, .381/.460/.691

  • Nolan Arenado (STL) - 18 games, 4 HR, T, 7 D, .346/.363/.615

  • Ian Happ (CHC) - 18 games, 6 HR, 4 D, .286/.338/.635

Several more of note… including another reason to not want the Cardinals to come to town, as their new backstop Willson Contreras has recently done a lot of damage in Cincy. And wow… I’m impressed by 8 HR in 9 games by Hunter Renfroe, though like Wong he has switched leagues so won’t be visiting the Reds very often:

  • Hunter Renfroe (LAA) - 9 games, 11-37, 8 HR

  • Juan Soto (SDP) - 8 games, 7-28, 5 HR

  • Willson Contreras (STL) - 9 games, 11-23 (.478), 3 HR, 3 D

  • Kris Bryant (COL) - 6 games, 11-24 (.458), 4 HR, 2 D

  • Jose Ramirez (CLE) - 5 games, 9-20 (.450), 3 HR, T, D

  • Harrison Bader (NYY) - 9 games, 12-27 (.444), 3 HR, 2 D

  • Freddie Freeman (LAD) - 7 games, 12-30, 3 HR, T, 3 D

  • Lane Thomas (WSN) - 7 games, 11-32, 4 HR 2 D

  • Austin Riley (ATL) - 7 games, 10-28, 3 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • Over his entire career Goldschmidt’s numbers at Cincinnati’s GABP are less exaggerated, but still very good, with a .313/.399/.641 slash with 17 HR in 228 PA.

  • Ian Happ also has good career numbers: .313/.411/.729 with 16 HR in 168 PA.

Boston - Fenway Park (PF = 109)

Vlad and Bo having been doing a lot of damage at Fenway the past couple of years:

  • Vlad Guerrero Jr. (TOR) - 19 games, 5 HR, 8 D, .444/.529/.764

  • Wander Franco (TBR) - 11 games, 2 HR, 2 T, .325/.449/.575

  • Bo Bichette (TOR) - 19 games, 4 HR, 5 D, .342/.395/.557

Also of note:

  • Javier Baez (DET) - 5 games, 9-18 (.500), 2 HR, T, 2 D

  • Mike Zunino (CLE) - 8 games, 8-23, 4 HR, T, 2 D

  • Jared Walsh (LAA) - 5 games, 9-20 (.450), 2 HR, 3 D

  • Nelson Cruz (SDP) - 6 games, 9-26, 3 HR, 2 D

  • Brandon Lowe (TBR) - 9 games, 10-23 (.435), 2 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Nelson Cruz has really done well at Fenway, posting a .343/.396/.652 slash line with 14 HR in 222 PA (49 games).

  • Brandon Lowe has too: .436/.549/.855 with 6 HR in 71 PA (17 games).

  • And while they’ve either not had many games or done particularly well in Boston in the past two years, there are some others with impressive numbers at Fenway over their careers:

    • Alex Bregman - .315/.448/.648 with 4 HR in 67 PA (15 games)

    • Giancarlo Stanton - .351/.416/.631 with 7 HR in 125 PA (29 games)

    • Rowdy Tellez - .323/.430/.600 with 5 HR in 79 PA (24 games)

    • Carlos Correa - .311/.402/.578 with 7 HR in 107 PA (23 games)

    • Michael Brantley - .366/.392/.570 with 4 HR and 17 doubles in 148 PA (34 games)

Los Angeles - Angels Stadium (PF=104)

Big drop in overall park factor from the three above, but Angels Stadium has the fourth highest HR park factor at 121, higher even than Coors’ HR park factor of 115. Only one guy who has played more than ten games stood out to me:

  • Yordan Alvarez (HOU) - 13 games, 2 HR, 7 D, .340/.421/.600

But here are a few others of note, including two Yankees and one who has switched to the NL for 2023:

  • Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (ARI) - 7 games, 10-22 (.455), 2 HR, 4 D

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 6 games, 11-20 (.550), 3 HR

  • Anthony Rizzo (NYY) - 6 games, 7-18, 3 HR, 2 D

Kansas City - Kauffman Stadium (PF = 103)

Here is my first note about a stadium with an above average Park Factor rating, but that has a low HR park factor rating—at 79, it is the third lowest in fact. That hasn’t been an issue for a few guys:

  • Josh Donaldson (NYY) - 10 games, 3 HR, 5 D, .324/.465/.735

  • Yasmani Grandal (CHW) - 13 games, 3 HR, .342/.460/.579

And here are a few more, including Arenado and Judge who show up on several of these lists, and Jarred Kelenic who thus far has generally struggled in the Majors, but I guess not when playing in Kansas City.

  • Nolan Arenado (STL) - 5 games, 8-20 (.400), 4 HR, 2 D

  • Jarred Kelenic (SEA) - 6 games, 9-22 (.409), 3 HR, 4 D

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 5 games, 8-23, 3 HR, D

  • Josh Naylor (CLE) - 8 games, 9-29, 3 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Over his career Donaldson has posted a .320/.415/.624 slash line with 8 HR in 147 PA (35 games).

  • Arenado has played in 10 games at Kauffman Stadium, and has slashed .395/.455/.947 with 6 HR in 44 PA.

  • And worth noting that Mookie Betts has only played 3 games at Kauffman Stadium the past two years (he went 4-11 with one HR and one double), but over his career he has slashed .348/.419/.652 with 6 HR in 106 PA (22 games).

Philadelphia - Citizens Bank Park (PF = 103)

Interesting to see Adam Duvall appear again on one of these lists. And Austin Riley’s 3 HR in 20 games isn’t huge, but he is hitting the ball well in Philly as indicated by 10 doubles.

  • Adam Duvall (BOS) - 10 games, 5 HR, 2 D, .333/.375/.806

  • Starling Marte (NYM) - 16 games, 2 HR, 8 D, .424/.465/.636

  • Austin Riley (ATL) - 20 games, 3 HR, 10 D, .325/.388/.571

  • Juan Soto (SDP) - 11 games, 2 HR, T, .357/.460/.548

And yet again here we see Arenado in another list:

  • Nolan Arenado (STL) - 6 games, 8-24, 4 HR, T, D

  • Manny Machado (SDP) - 6 games, 8-23, 3 HR

Sustained success:

  • Duvall has actually done quite well in Philadelphia over his entire career, slashing .339/.374/.687 with 11 HR in 124 PA (33 games).

  • And Soto also with a .333/.438/.683 slash with 12 HR in 144 PA (31 games).

  • And Marte even more so, with an impressive .399/.454/.630 slash with 5 HR and 17 D in 152 PA (35 games).

Chicago - Guaranteed Rate Field (PF = 102)

Although far behind Cincinnati’s homerun park factor of 150, the White Sox’ home does have the second highest homerun park factor of 124, just ahead of Dodgers Stadium and Angel Stadium. And Jorge Polanco sure seems to like playing here, given his 6 HR in 11 games:

  • Jorge Polanco (MIN) - 11 games, 6 HR, 2 D, .349/.431/.814

  • Josh Naylor (CLE) - 15 games, 4 HR, 5 D, .356/.387/.644

  • Nelson Cruz (SDP) - 10 games, 3 HR, 3 D, .316/.364/.632

In addition to Polanco, a couple of new Twins for 2023 (Vazquez and Gallo) also seem to like hitting at Guaranteed Rate Field:

  • Patrick Wisdom (CHC) - 5 games, 6-18, 4 HR, D

  • Giancarlo Stanton (NYY) - 6 games, 10-23 (.435), 3 HR, 2 D

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 6 games, 8-20 (.400), 3 HR, D

  • Adolis García (TEX) - 6 games, 11-26 (.423), 4 HR

  • Christian Vázquez (MIN) - 9 games, 15-27 (.556), HR, D

  • Steven Kwan (CLE) - 9 games, 18-43 (.419), 2 HR, T, D

  • Joey Gallo (MIN) - 9 games, 11-35, 4 HR

Sustained success:

  • Worth noting that Mike Trout has only gone 3-14 in his four games at Guaranteed Rate Field the last two years, but over his career he has done quite well: .343/.455/.647 with 9 HR in 121 PA (28 games).

Los Angeles - Dodger Stadium (PF = 102)

Looks like the Padres will be glad to get Tatis back for their visits to Dodger Stadium in 2023:

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. (SDP) - 10 games, 7 HR, .368/.400/.921

  • Christian Walker (ARI) - 15 games, 6 HR, .289/.373/.654

  • Eduardo Escobar (NYM) - 14 games, 4 HR, 4 D .340/.346/.660

A few others who have done well lately at Dodger Stadium include:

  • Bryce Harper (PHI) - 5 games, 10-18 (.556), 3 HR, 4 D

  • Pete Alonso (NYM) - 8 games, 11-34, 5 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Over a bit of a longer period dating back to 2018, Walker has definitely enjoyed hitting at Dodger Stadium: .311/.367/.700, with 11 HR in 98 PA.

  • Alonso’s career line is .360/.396/.880 with 7 HR in 12 games.

Baltimore - Orioles Park at Camden Yards (PF = 101)

This is a long list, with some really impressive numbers, like Trevino batting .560, Judge hitting 11 HR in 18 games, and Bichette hitting 8 HR in 17 games.

  • Jose Trevino (NYY) - 11 games, 14-25, 2 HR, 4 D, .560/.577/.960

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 18 games, 11 HR, 4 D, .375/.467/.953

  • Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (ARI) - 13 games, 5 HR, 4 D, .442/.520/.884

  • J.D. Martinez (LAD) - 14 games, 5 HR, 5 D, .397/.444/.741

  • Bo Bichette (TOR) - 17 games, 8 HR, 1 D, .403/.427/.750

  • Randy Arozarena (TBR) - 15 games, 6 HR, 2 D, .394/.437/.697

  • Josh Donaldson (NYY) - 13 games, 2 HR, 6 D, .341/.442/.614

  • Giancarlo Stanton (NYY) - 15 games, 3 HR, 3 D, .373/.439/.576

  • Teoscar Hernandez (TOR) - 14 games, 3 HR, 7 D, .327/.383/.618

  • Rafael Devers (BOS) - 18 games, 6 HR, 3 D, .315/.370/.603

And for those with fewer games at Camden, Joey Wendle’s .552 average and 4 HR in 7 games stands out:

  • Joey Wendle (MIA) - 7 games, 16-29 (.552), 4 HR, T, 2D

  • Andrew Vaughn (CHW) - 6 games, 10-23 (.435), 3 HR, 2 D

  • Nathaniel Lowe (TEX) - 7 games, 11-28, 3 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • Of course Judge’s full career Camden numbers aren’t quite as lofty as those from the past two years, but they are still outstanding: .310/.432/.722 with 19 HR in 194 PA (44 games).

  • Ditto for J.D. Martinez career visiting Baltimore, where he has slashed .299/.399/.672 with 18 HR in 209 PA (46 games).

  • And Gurriel has hit .364/.418/.609 with 7 HR in 124 PA (29 games) over his career at Camden.

  • Nathaniel Lowe has slashed .343/.390/.643 with 6 HR in 77 PA (18 games)

  • And lastly, while his numbers at Camden the past two years haven’t been impressive, Jose Altuve over his career has hit .396/.464/.622 with 5 HR in 125 PA (27 games).

Arizona - Chase Field (PF = 101)

Like Kansas City above, Chase Field is another ballpark where the overall park factor isn’t so bad (about league average), but it is below average for homeruns park factor at only 84. Trea Turner has of course changed teams for 2023, so it will be interesting to see if he continues to be an extra-base hit machine at Chase Field.

  • Trea Turner (PHI) - 15 games, 5 HR, 2 T, 8 D, .393/.439/.836

  • Freddie Freeman (LAD) - 13 games, 3 HR, 6 D, .353/.421/.647

  • Kris Bryant (COL) - 11 games, 3 HR, 6 D, .325/.386/.700

Also of note are:

  • Fernando Tatis (SDP) - 6 games, 11-24 (.458), 3 HR, 5 D

  • Austin Riley (ATL) - 7 games, 12-30 (.400), 5 HR, 3 D

  • Jesús Aguilar (OAK) - 7 games, 11-27 (.407), 3 HR, 3 D

  • Evan Longoria (ARI) - 7 games, 9-21 (.429), HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Trea Turner’s career slash line has been .368/.422/.726 with 8 HR in 25 games.

  • Freeman’s career numbers at Chase are even better than those shown above for the past two years: .366/.430/.674 with 11 HR and 18 D in 42 games.

  • And Bryant has slashed .327/.395/.636 with 7 HR in and 13 D in 27 games.

  • Tatis’ career line at Chase Field is impressive: .408/.456/.918 with 6 HR in 13 games.

  • And Longoria, who in 2023 will call Chase Field his home, has consistently hit well there over his entire career: .359/.417/.631 with 7 HR in 115 PA (27 games).

Pittsburgh - PNC Park (PF = 100)

Like Chase Field above, the HR park factor for PNC Park is much lower (87) than its overall park factor (100). Interesting to see how well Tommy Edman suddenly does when visiting Pittsburgh:

  • Tommy Edman (STL) - 17 games, 3 HR, 10 D, .429/.468/.700

  • Rowdy Tellez (MIL) - 16 games, 5 HR, 2 D, .309/.397/.636

  • Willy Adames (MIL) - 20 games, 5 HR, 8 D, .321/.380/.595

And one more in fewer games played:

  • Edmundo Sosa (PHI) - 8 games, 13-28 (.464), HR, 3 T, 2 D

Sustained success:

Three others have hit fairly well at PNC Park over the past two years, but even better over their careers:

  • Eduardo Escobar - .488/.510/.791 with 2 HR in 49 PA (12 games)

  • Jesús Aguilar - .349/.418/.744 with 10 HR in 98 PA (31 games)

  • Joc Pederson - .313/.395/.716 with 7 HR in 76 PA (22 games)

Milwaukee - American Family Field (PF = 100)

Once again we see Nolan Arenado showing up on one of these lists:

  • Nolan Arenado (STL) - 19 games, 5 HR, 8 D, .338/.407/.662

  • Patrick Wisdom (CHC) - 12 games, 3 HR, 4 D, .317/.391/.634

And here are a few others of note, including Lane Thomas showing up again, this time with an impressive .522 average over the past two seasons:

  • Lane Thomas (WSN) - 8 games, 12-23 (.522), HR, 2 T, 4 D

  • Bryce Harper (PHI) - 6 games, 7-21, 4 HR

  • Marcell Ozuna (ATL) - 6 games, 8-23, 3 HR

  • Freddie Freeman (LAD) - 7 games, 9-30, 3 HR, 2 D

  • Tommy Pham (NYM) - 7 games, 10-27, 2 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • Arenado’s career stats in Milwaukee are even more impressive than the above from 2021-22, as he has slashed .367/.433/.748 with 13 HR in 157 PA (36 games).

  • Ozuna over his career has slashed .294/.363/.606 with 16 HR in 191 PA (45 games)

  • Pham has slashed .317/.375/.663 with 8 HR in 112 PA (28 games).

Giants - Oracle Park (PF = 100)

The overall park factor might be average, but the homerun park factor is one of the lowest at only 81. So not a lot of guys visit Oracle Park and consistently smash a lot of homers:

  • Jake McCarthy (ARI) - 13 games, HR, 5 D, .475/.512/.675

  • Fernando Tatis (SDP) - 10 games, 2 HR, 4 D, .366/.395/.610

Except all-or-nothing slugger Patrick Wisdom, who appears now for the third time so far:

  • Patrick Wisdom (CHC) - 8 games, 8-24, 5 HR, 2 D

Atlanta - Truist Park (PF = 100)

Not much jumped out at me here, but Juan Soto sure has been a beast over the past two years in 15 games in Atlanta:

  • Juan Soto (SDP) - 15 games, 6 HR, .465/.629/.884

  • Jeff McNeil (NYM) - 12 games, HR, 3 D, .405/.419/.548

And Bryan Reynolds has been great in Atlanta too, albeit in fewer recent games:

  • Bryan Reynolds (PIT) - 8 games, 16-31 (.516), 3 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • Soto has been good in Atlanta over his entire career as he has slashed .339/.507/.652 with 11 HR in 150 PA (34 games).

  • McNeil doesn’t hit for much power, but he’s not only batted .405 in his last 12 games in Atlanta, but has batted .395 over 23 games (91 PA) in his career.

Washington - Nationals Park (PF = 100)

Unlike Atlanta above, there were a bunch of great stat lines here, including Bryce Harper who has continued to hit well when he visits his old team. Dansby Swanson has of course switched teams, and his .282 average in Nationals Park isn’t anything special, but hitting 8 HR in 19 games is impressive.

  • Matt Vierling (DET) - 10 games, 3 HR, T, D, .433/.452/.867

  • Pete Alonso (NYM) - 20 games, 7 HR, T, 5 D, .320/.402/.693

  • Brandon Nimmo (NYM) - 11 games, 0 HR, T, 3 D, .442/.529/.558

  • Bryce Harper (PHI) - 17 games, 4 HR, 5 D, .358/.449/.612

  • Michael Harris II (ATL) - 10 games, 3 HR, T, 2 D, .342/.372/.659

  • Matt Olson (ATL) - 10 games, 4 HR, D, .310/.348/.619

  • Dansby Swanson (CHC) - 19 games, 8 HR, 2 D, .282/.333/.615

Some others of note in fewer games includes a superstar in Manny Machado, but also some lesser names. And for Kyle Schwarber’s stats, I’ve only included his 2022 numbers, as in 2021 he called Nationals Park home for part of the season.

  • Orlando Arcia (ATL) - 9 games, 11-24 (.458), 5 HR

  • Javier Báez (DET) - 5 games, 9-18 (.500), 2 HR, 2 D

  • Paul DeJong (STL) - 5 games, 6-18, 4 HR

  • Manny Machado (SDP) - 6 games, 12-26 (.462), 2 HR, 4 D

  • Bryan Reynolds (PIT) - 5 games, 9-23, 3 HR, 2 D

  • Kevin Pillar (ATL) - 9 games, 9-25, 3 HR, 2 D

  • *Kyle Schwarber (PHI) - 9 games, 11-33, 4 HR, T, D

Sustained success:

  • Pete Alonso’s career numbers at Nationals Park are an impressive .341/.417/.697 with 12 HR in 151 PA (35 games).

Cleveland - Progressive Field (PF = 99)

Only a few with 10+ games stood out to me here:

  • Luis Robert (CHW) - 10 games, 3 HR, 3 D, .405/.450/.730

  • Nick Gordon (MIN) - 11 games, 3 HR, D, .308/.424/.692

  • Byron Buxton (MIN) - 10 games, 4 HR, 2 D, .290/.290/.658

A few others had good numbers in fewer games, including a surprise name in Christian Bethancourt:

  • Marcus Semien (TEX) - 6 games, 13-23 (.565), 3 HR, 2 D

  • Christian Bethancourt (TBR) - 6 games, 11-24 (.458), 3 HR, 3 D

  • Rafael Devers (BOS) - 6 games, 10-26, 3 HR, D

  • Seth Brown (OAK) - 7 games, 7-26, 4 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Devers has done pretty well in Cleveland over his entire career: .329/.405/.657 with 6 HR in 79 PA (16 games).

Toronto - Rogers Centre (PF = 99)

A couple of Yankees have been hitting well at Rogers Centre:

  • Gleyber Torres (NYY) - 11 games, 3 HR, 5 D, .429/.432/.762

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 12 games, 5 HR, 2 D, .286/.439/.691

And then a few others have done well in fewer games:

  • José Abreu (HOU) - 7 games, 10-27, 3 HR

  • Adley Rutschman (BAL) - 9 games, 12-34, 3 HR, 3 D

  • Isaac Paredes (TBR) - 8 games, 11-35, 4 HR, 2 D

  • Ji-Man Choi (PIT) - 8 games, 8-28, 3 HR, 2 D

  • Jose Ramirez (CLE) - 6 games, 8-25, 3 HR

Sustained success:

  • Mike Trout has only gone 3-13 (though with 2 HR) in 2021-22 at Rogers Centre, but in his entire career he has slashed .320/.428/.648 with 11 HR in 152 PA (32 games).

  • Jorge Polanco has only gone 6-24 in the past two years, but has done very well over his career: .366/.423/.620 with 4 HR in 78 PA (17 games).

Miami - loanDepot Park (PF = 99)

Three Mets hitters have done well lately in Miami:

Three more of note:

  • Mookie Betts (LAD) - 8 games, 12-30, 5 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • Justin Turner has also hit consistently well in Miami over his career, with a .402/.466/.696 slash line and 6 HR and 10 doubles in 117 PA (33 games).

  • Ronald Acuna too: .339/.432/.598 with 8 HR in 148 PA (33 games).

Texas - Globe Life Field (PF = 99)

Several Angels hitters have cleared enjoyed hitting at the relatively new Globe Life Field in Texas:

  • Jared Walsh (LAA) - 12 games, 3 HR, 4 D, .465/.521/.767

  • Taylor Ward (LAA) - 10 games, 3 HR, 2 D, .412/.524/.735

  • Bo Bichette (TOR) - 6 games, 10-24 (.417), 3 HR, T, 3 D

New York - Yankee Stadium (PF = 99)

It is worth noting that while the overall park factor is 99, the HR park factor is higher at 113 (8th in MLB overall).

While a .293 average is not crazy, Vlad’s total of 9 HR in his last 20 games at Yankee Stadium is impressive:

  • Randal Grichuk (COL) - 10 games, 3 HR, D, .367/.424/.700

  • Vlad Guerrero Jr. (TOR) - 20 games, 9 HR, 2 D, .293/.369/.680

  • Marcus Semien (TEX) - 13 games, 5 HR, 2 D, .294/.379/.628

Two Astros hitters have also done well in fewer games:

  • Yordan Alvarez (HOU) - 7 games, 9-24, 3 HR

  • George Springer (TOR) - 9 games, 14-34 (.412), 2 HR, 3 D

  • Jose Altuve (HOU) - 7 games, 8-27, 3 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • José Ramírez (CLE) has 2 HR in his last six games at Yankee Stadium, but an even more impressive .437/.505/.839 slash line with 9 HR in 101 PA (25 games) during his career.

Chicago - Wrigley Field (PF = 98)

Wow. Votto might not be the player he used to be, but he continues to crush it at Wrigley.

  • Joey Votto (CIN) - 10 games, 8 HR, 3 D, .389/.465/1.139

  • Harrison Bader (NYY) - 11 games, 4 HR, T, 4 D, .524/.546/.952

  • Willy Adames (MIL) - 10 games, 3 HR, 2 D, .350/.413/.625

  • Lars Nootbar (STL) - 15 games, 4 HR, 4 D, .311/.367/.667

Here are a few others with fewer games in 2020-21:

  • Jace Peterson (OAK) - 9 games, 11-23 (.478), 2 HR, T, 4 D

  • Freddie Freeman (LAD) - 6 games, 10-21 (.476), HR, 5 D

  • Adam Duvall (BOS) - 6 games, 7-22, 5 HR

  • Daulton Varsho (TOR) - 7 games, 11-30, 3 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • When I said continue, I did mean continue, as Votto has hit pretty well at Wrigley for his entire career: .321/.424/.601, with 24 HR and 42 D in 505 PA (115 games).

  • Nick Castellanos has hit really well at Wrigley during his career. He played for the Cubs for part of 2019, so over half of his career games there have not been as a visiting hitter. But overall he has slashed .376/.411/.723 with 12 HR and an impressive 22 doubles in 185 PA (43 games).

Houston - Minute Maid Park (PF = 98)

Not much to see here: no standouts with more than 10 games at Minute Maid Park, but here are a few others of note:

  • Austin Hays (BAL) - 6 games, 10-24 (.417), 3 HR

  • Cedric Mullins (BAL) - 6 games, 11-25 (.440), HR, D

  • Jeimer Candelario (WSN) - 7 games, 11-27 (.407), HR, 2 D

Minnesota - Target Field (PF = 98)

Just a couple of guys—both now on the White Sox—with 10+ games played over the past two seasons:

  • Andrew Benintendi (CHW) - 13 games, 4 HR, 2 D, .447/.472/.745

  • Yoan Moncada (CHW) - 12 games, 2 HR, T, 5 D, .327/.411/.592

  • Teoscar Hernandez (SEA) - 8 games, 10-32, 3 HR, 4 D

  • Yordan Alvarez (HOU) - 6 games, 8-26, 3 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Benintendi has done well in Minnesota over his career since 2017, slashing .385/.431/.670, with 7 HR in 102 PA (22 games).

  • Bogaerts has also had really strong results at Target Field over his full career: .364/.402/.600 with 3 HR, 2 T, and an impressive 13 doubles in 117 PA (25 games).

Detroit - Comerica Park (PF = 97)

While Detroit doesn’t have the lowest overall park factor, it does have the lowest current HR park factor at only 75.

  • Nelson Cruz (SDP) - 11 games, 4 HR, 3 D, .348/.412/.674

  • José Abreu (HOU) - 17 games, 3 HR, 9 D, .365/.427/.608

  • Andrew Vaughn (CHW) - 16 games, 4 HR, 2 D, .351/.413/.597

Here are a few others with 2021-22 numbers of note:

  • Kiké Hernández (BOS) - 5 games, 6-19, 2 HR, T, 3 D

  • Josh Donaldson (NYY) - 9 games, 10-28, 3 HR, 4 D

  • Yordan Alvarez (HOU) - 6 games, 7-21, 3 HR, D

  • Eddie Rosario (ATL) - 7 games, 10-23 (.435), 2 HR, D

  • Bo Bichette (TOR) - 6 games, 11-27 (.407), 2 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

  • Over his long career Cruz has slashed .330/.384/.611 with 21 HR in 294 PA (67 games) in Detroit

  • And Abreu has done similarly well: .340/.397/.607 with 16 HR and an impressive 29 doubles in 335 PA (74 games).

Tampa - Tropicana Field (PF = 96)

Aaron Judge hasn’t always hit well at the Trop, but he has over the past two seasons:

  • Jorge Mateo (BAL) - 13 games, 0 HR, T, 7 D, .426/.471/.617

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 18 games, 6 HR, 2 D, .339/.409/.661

A few others worth noting include:

  • Shohei Ohtani (LAA) - 7 games, 9-23, 2 HR, T, 3 D

  • Sean Murphy (ATL) - 8 games, 9-28, 3 HR, T, 2 D

  • Jorge Polanco (MIN) - 6 games, 8-25, 2 HR, 5 D

  • Whit Merrifield (TOR) - 7 games, 7-24, 3 HR, 2 D

Sustained success:

Two of these guys have done well in Tampa over their full careers:

  • Ohtani has slashed .356/.420/.733 with 3 HR, 2 T, 4 D in 50 PA (13 game)

  • Merrifield has slashed .328/.388/.689 with 6 HR in 68 PA (17 games).

New York - Citi Field (PF = 96)

Not much to see here at all, just these two guys with stats from 7 games each during the last two years:

  • Paul Goldschmidt (STL) - 7 games, 14-31 (.452), 4 HR, 5 D

  • Rodolpho Castro (PIT) - 7 games, 7-25, 4 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Over his career thus far, Juan Soto has had good success at Citi Field, posting a .350/.464/.709 slash with 10 HR in 125 PA (30 games).

St. Louis - Busch Stadium (PF = 95)

The HR park factor here is only 82, so not surprising to not find many visiting hitters with crazy numbers.

  • Avisail Garcia (TEX) - 10 games, 5 HR, 1 D, .333/.400/.778

Here are the few others I noticed with nice stats in less than 10 games played:

  • Jesse Winker (MIL) - 7 games, 13-30 (.433), 5 HR

  • Freddie Freeman (LAD) - 6 games, 14-25 (.560), 2 HR, 3 D

  • Will Smith (LAD) - 5 games, 9-18 (.500), 2 HR, D

Sustained success:

  • Freeman has had good results at Busch throughout his career, with a slash line of .387/.497/.656 with 8 HR in 145 PA (33 games).

  • Most of Winker’s HRs at Busch have come in the past two years, but overall he has done well there since 2017: .371/.446/.663 with 7 HR in 101 PA (24 games).

Oakland - Oakland Coliseum (PF = 94)

Oakland Coliseum is currently the second lowest HR park factor at 76, so not a lot of impressive visiting hitter numbers.

  • Nathaniel Lowe (TEX) - 18 games, 5 HR, T, 4 D, .313/.395/.627

Here are a few others with less than 10 games at the Coliseum:

  • Joey Gallo (MIN) - 7 games, 9-24, 5 HR, D

  • Eloy Jiménez (CHW) - 5 games, 9-20 (.450), 2 HR, D

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 8 games, 10-30, 3 HR, 2 D

  • Julio Rodríguez (SEA) - 9 games, 16-36 (.444), HR, T, 3 D

  • Salvador Perez (KCR) - 7 games, 8-27, 3 HR, 3 D

San Diego - Petco Park (PF = 94)

Known as a pitcher’s park, Petco is below average but doesn’t have as low of a HR park factor at 95 as a few others.

  • Freddie Freeman (LAD) - 12 games, 3 HR, D, .356/.464/.578

  • Brendan Rodgers (COL) - 12 games, 3 HR, 2 D, .326/.362/.581

  • Trea Turner (PHI) - 16 games, 4 HR, T, 5 D, .315/.351/.575

Here are a few more with good results in less than 10 games played:

  • Nolan Arenado (STL) - 6 games, 9-22 (.409), 3 HR, 2 D

  • Willson Contreras (STL) - 5 games, 8-18 (.444), 2 HR

  • Elvis Andrus (CHW) - 5 games, 8-19 (.421), 2 HR, D

  • Eduardo Escobar (NYM) - 9 games, 12-35, 2 HR, T, 3 D

Sustained success:

  • Contreras is with a new team now in St. Louis, but he has hit well over his entire career as a visitor to Petco: .341/.473/.614 with 3 HR in 55 PA (14 games).

Seattle - T-Mobile Park (PF = 91)

As with Petco, T-Mobile Park has a somewhat higher HR park factor (97) than its league-low overall park factor. I only found two, somewhat surprising names, that have done well as visiting hitters over the past two years.

  • David Fletcher (LAA) - 11 games, 3 HR, T, 4 D, .419/.444/.767

  • Elvis Andrus (CHW) - 16 games, 5 HR, 3 D, .327/.417/.673

Here are a few more in fewer games played:

  • Manuel Margot (TBR) - 7 games, 9-22 (.409), 4 HR, D

  • Salvador Perez (KCR) - 7 games, 11-28, 5 HR, 2 D

  • Mike Trout (LAA) - 8 games, 10-31, 6 HR, D

  • Aaron Judge (NYY) - 6 games, 8-23, 3 HR, 2 D

  • Teoscar Hernandez (TOR) - 7 games, 11-27 (.407), 2 HR, 3 D

Sustained success:

  • Fletcher has actually done pretty well over his career when hitting in Seattle with a .339/.374/.596 slash line and 5 HR in 116 PA (27 games).

  • Judge too: .288/.405/.712 slash line with 7 HR in 74 PA (16 games).

  • But it is Mike Trout who has truly been phenomenal over an extended period as a visiting hitter in Seattle: .332/.428/.716 with 33 HR in 393 PA (89 games).

Phew! That was a lot more analysis than I thought it would be. In the end, the players who appear the most often on these lists are not big surprises—guys like Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman, Nolan Arenado, Mike Trout, and so on. But there were definitely some surprises along the way, and some interesting players to keep an eye on in 2023 as they visit various ballparks—and particular when facing weak starting pitchers or bullpens at those stadiums.
